Role summary

This role is for an enthusiastic Band 5 Anaesthetic and Recovery Practitioner to join the theatres team at The Alexandra Hospital, Redditch, as part of the countywide theatres service. You will deliver safe, effective, and compassionate perioperative care to patients, assisting in anaesthesia preparation and providing high-quality post-anaesthetic care. The position offers opportunities for both experienced and newly qualified staff to develop skills within a supportive multidisciplinary team, working across anaesthetics and recovery. You must be a Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner with current NMC or HCPC registration.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, compassionate, and high-quality perioperative care to patients undergoing surgical procedures.
  • Prepare the theatre environment, equipment, and instruments for surgical procedures, ensuring compliance with infection control and safety standards.
  • Assist the surgical and anaesthetic teams during operations by performing scrub, circulating, or anaesthetic practitioner duties.
  • Monitor patients' condition throughout the perioperative period, responding promptly to any changes or concerns.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records and documentation in line with legal, professional, and Trust requirements.
  • Provide supervision and support to staff and students, acting as a mentor and assessor.

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience working in the Theatre environment.
  • Must be Anaesthetic and Recovery Trained
  • Registered Nurse Level 1 (currently registered with NMC or Registered ODP (currently registered with HCPC)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Must be Anaesthetic and Recovery Trained
  • Excellent attendance and time keeping.
  • Willing to work across hospital sites within scope of practice as and when required.
  • Able to work and cope with rotating shift patterns - early, late, night shifts over seven days of the week and on-call as necessary.
  • To deputise for the team leader as necessary.
  • Awareness of current peri-operative practice.
  • Reporting incidents using datix or similar reporting system.
  • Knowledge of anatomy/physiology knowledge relevant to role.
  • Good verbal, literacy and communication skills.
  • Computer literate (use of IT software packages e.g. Word, Email).
  • Understanding of manual handling practices and policies.
  • Awareness of Health and Safety.
  • Clinical Governance

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of clinical supervision.
  • Competent/ assist anaesthetist / recover wide range of elective and emergency patients.
