Role summary
This role is for a highly motivated Practice Development Practitioner in Adult Mental Health inpatient services. You will support staff and students in their professional development through clinical leadership, knowledge sharing, and modelling high professional standards. The position involves ensuring progressive learning environments, delivering high-standard care through specialist knowledge, and implementing key practice developments and quality initiatives. You will also contribute to inter-professional learning and in-house teaching.
Key responsibilities
- Support staff and students in their professional development through effective clinical leadership, sharing of knowledge and modelling the highest professional standards.
- Ensure services provide a progressive learning and development environment for all grades of staff, including temporary staff.
- Ensure a high standard of care delivery through specialist knowledge and skills in clinical practice, providing advice, mentoring, supervision and training across services.
- Implement key practice developments and quality initiatives in order to achieve excellence in patient care in partnership with nursing and clinical multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide a Senior Practitioner perspective in discussions with senior medical and clinical colleagues, Heads of Nursing and operational managers in developing a co-ordinated approach to service delivery.
- Promote and contribute to inter-professional learning activities across services and implement in-house teaching.
Essential criteria
- Registration with relevant professional body. (e.g. NMC, GMC, HCPC, Social Work-England)
- For nursing professions - Recognised Practice Supervisor and /or Practice Assessor, clinical educator or equivalent
- And - Trained in providing clinical supervision
- For other professions - evidence of training in clinical supervision of other staff and able to demonstrate competence in this area of practice in clinical supervision of other staff and/or students/ trainees.
- And have - Equivalent clinical experience to that of a Post Grad Diploma/master's level such as working as a band 6 (or above) in relevant clinical area with significant experience (see below under experience), together with evidence of relevant CPD
- Leadership qualification or willingness to work towards. Qualification must be achieved within agreed timescale.
- Substantial clinical experience of working in relevant specialist area in collaboration with service users, families and relevant others or transferable experience of similar settings and willing to gain knowledge within first 12 months.
- Experience of assessing and managing risk (harm to self, others and safeguarding)
- Substantial experience of working in a multi disciplinary team
- Involvement in quality improvement activities

- Evidence of continuous personal development
- Service users and their families/carers
- Extensive experience in a clinical nurse leadership role
- Extensive experience providing clinical supervision, mentoring and teaching to healthcare professionals and students.
- Experience of been involved in the delivering of change and service improvement.
- Experience of resolving complex and challenging situations in collaboration with other disciplines and agencies.
- Extensive knowledge of current issues relating to health needs of patients in the field of practice, regionally and nationally
- Experience of application of relevant legislation (i.e., Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act) in practice
- Sound knowledge of principles of nursing and how to apply these in a practice setting
- Significant evidenced based knowledge of best practice in caring for patients in the designated field.
- Good understanding of relevant legislation and guidance (e.g. Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, CPA, Safe Staffing) and its application in practice.
- Good understanding of clinical governance and its application in practice.
- Good understanding of Recovery principles and application in practice
- Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice.
- Detailed understanding of Care Programme Approach and its application in practice.
- Detailed understanding of Clinical Risk Assessment and Management/Harm Minimisation and its application in practice.
- Research and development methodology.
- Understanding of psychological models of care and treatment.
- The Trust's Quality Improvement System (QIS) (or within agreed timescale).
