Role summary
This is a permanent Band 6 Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist role at The Parapet, King Edward VII Hospital. The successful candidate will provide expert support to breast cancer patients from investigation and diagnosis through treatment and onto the Supported Self-Management Pathway. The role involves working within a multidisciplinary team in both outpatient and inpatient settings, offering specialist nursing care, running nurse-led clinics, and helping patients manage their condition effectively. We are looking for a passionate nurse, potentially with oncology or palliative care experience, or someone keen to specialise in breast cancer.
Key responsibilities
- Act as a Keyworker for breast cancer patients, linking them with healthcare professionals and providing advocacy and support.
- Support the development and evaluation of the Breast Cancer service to improve patient care standards.
- Deliver comprehensive, holistic, and evidence-based nurse-led services for breast cancer patients.
- Ensure the role encompasses clinical practice, management, education, research, and audit, aligning with the National Cancer Agenda.
- Work towards becoming a clinical expert in breast cancer, demonstrating strong and empathetic communication skills.
- Work autonomously while being supported by a cohesive nursing team.
Essential criteria
- Degree in Nursing
- Mentorship qualification
- Evidence of continuous professional development
- NMC Registration
- Enthusiastic, motivated, self-starter
- Demonstrates strong and empathetic communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work independently, but equally be a good team collaborator
- Ability to cope with professional responsibilities, as well as the emotional and psychological pressures of role, with support.
- Good time management and organisational skills
- IT literate, with good presentation skills
- Flexible attitude to working, to meet changing demands of the service
- Relevant post registration experience at Band 5, or above
- Multi-professional working
- Able to demonstrate utilisation of research-based evidence and recent use of audit
- Experience in patient education/support/counselling skills
Desirable criteria
- Breast/oncology/SACT qualification
- Counselling/communication qualification, eg Sage and Thyme
- Prosthesis fitting course
- Psychology Level 2 training
- Project management
- SACT administration
- Awareness of the National Cancer Agenda and guidelines
- Ability to influence current practice and influence change
- Advanced Communication Skills.
- Delivering nurse-led clinics
- Breast prosthesis fitting
- Experience of working in oncology, SACT, palliative care
- Relevant post registration experience at Band 6

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our highly regarded Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist Team at The Parapet, King Edward VII Hospital , as a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist .
This is a rewarding role at the heart of breast cancer care, supporting patients from the point of investigation and diagnosis, through treatment, and onwards to the Supported Self-Management Pathway . You will play an active role within the multidisciplinary team, providing expert support to patients across both outpatient and inpatient settings.
As part of this varied and fulfilling position, you will:
- support patients undergoing investigation for breast cancer, throughout diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care
- provide specialist nursing care and guidance to patients before and after surgery
- run nurse-led clinics, including prosthesis clinics
- work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive compassionate, seamless, high-quality care
- help patients to self-manage effectively and live well with and beyond cancer treatment
