Role summary
This role supports Speech and Language Therapists in delivering interventions to children with complex needs and their families across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire. The assistant will work in various community settings, managing their own clinical diary and providing communication support. It's an opportunity to join an innovative service with strong support and supervision.
Key responsibilities
- Work closely with Speech & Language Therapists and other Assistants to deliver speech and language interventions to children and families.
- Provide communication support for children with complex needs, including those who are non-speaking.
- Provide specialist speech, language, and communication interventions to an individual caseload within the Complex Needs Team under SLT supervision.
- Collaborate with families and other agencies for effective multi-disciplinary approaches to communication and dysphagia management.
- Provide supervision and/or mentoring of newly qualified staff, Assistant Speech & Language Therapists and students as appropriate.
- Undertake administrative duties related to your specific work.
Essential criteria
- Relevant qualification at equivalent level of NVQ level 3
- General education to GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English
- Evidence of relevant courses or personal development related to child development/working with children
- Evidence of relevant courses or personal development in the area of communication
- Experience of working with children with additional needs
- Experience of working with children and their families
- Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team or teams
- Knowledge and understanding of normal child development (including speech and language development)
- Knowledge of a range of Speech, language and communication difficulties and how to support these, including signs and symbols
- Awareness of the impact communication difficulties may have on the ability of children to function in their every-day life.
- Excellent interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills
- Ability to analyse children's responses to therapy and to accurately feed back observations to an SLT
- Ability to work within their competency and seek support as appropriate
- Able to work independently to plan, prioritise and organise workload

Desirable criteria
- Additional training related to supporting children's communication difficulties e.g. Makaton, PECS
- Experience of working within the NHS
- Experience of using AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) approaches
- Experience of working within therapy services
- Experience of working with children with Speech Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
- Experience of working in schools

Job summary
Assistant SLT (band 4): 30 hours per week
This role is based in our Complex Needs SLT team providing advice and support to children with complex needs and their families across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire.
As an assistant speech and language therapist in the team you will be supporting our SLT's to deliver a range of interventions across community venues such as homes, clinics, nurseries, special and mainstream schools.
The Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service aims to maximise the potential of childrento communicate in the environments and languages in which they need to function, includingrelated impairments of eating and drinking.
This is an opportunity to join our innovative Speech and Language Therapy service at an exciting time of transformation. You will be well supported and supervised by Specialist SLT's, with many opportunities for peer support.
Main duties of the job
Working across settings such as children's homes, clinics, community venues, nurseries and schools, you will have extensive relevant experience of working with children with significant SEN and associated speech, language and communication difficulties.
