Role summary
This is a 12-month fixed-term opportunity for an experienced cardiac nurse to join the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Nurse Specialist Team, providing maternity cover. The role involves delivering specialist nursing care, advice, education, and support to adult patients with congenital heart disease and their families across the North West, North Wales, and the Isle of Man. The successful candidate will work in outpatient clinics, contribute to patient assessment and management, and coordinate care within a multidisciplinary team. This position offers a chance to develop specialist expertise within a regional ACHD service.
Key responsibilities
- Provide specialist nursing care and support to adults with congenital heart disease.
- Deliver specialist ACHD outpatient clinics.
- Offer expert advice and education to patients and families.
- Support the assessment and ongoing management of patients with complex congenital heart conditions.
- Coordinate care across the multidisciplinary and regional service.
- Contribute to education, service development, and improvement of ACHD nursing services.
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Relevant post-registration qualification in a cardiac speciality
- Evidence of postgraduate study and ongoing continuing professional development relevant to the role
- Mentorship / practice assessor qualification, or equivalent experience in supporting learners in practice
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent clinical documentation and record keeping
- Ability to work autonomously in a complex and demanding environment
- Ability to make challenging clinical decisions and manage risk
- Ability to assess, prioritise and manage patients with complex needs
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Good problem-solving and organisational skills
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and electronic clinical information systems.
- Ability to use clinical information to support patient care and service improvement
- Significant experience in cardiology at Band 6 or above.
- Experience of working within a cardiac specialist service.
- Experience in the assessment and management of acutely unwell patients
- Experience of delivering education and teaching to staff and patients.

Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualification in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)
- MSc or working towards a Master's level qualification in Advanced Clinical Practice, Cardiology, or a relevant speciality
- Non-Medical Prescribing qualification
- Advanced assessment / clinical examination qualification
- Teaching or education qualification
- Knowledge and understanding of Adult Congenital Heart Disease and the needs of the ACHD population.
- Experience of working within a specialist cardiac service
- Advanced clinical assessment and diagnostic skills
- Knowledge of quality improvement and service development.
- Competent in the use of databases and spreadsheets
- Experience of working within adult or paediatric congenital heart disease
- Experience of delivering presentations at local, regional or national level
