Role summary
This Deputy Sister / Charge Nurse role is with the Patient Emergency Response and Resuscitation Team (PERRT@QS) at Queen Square. The team provides expert critical care nursing response to deteriorating patients, supports patients stepping down from critical care, and delivers specialised resuscitation training. The role involves working at an enhanced level across the Four Pillars of Advanced Practice and contributing to service development and patient safety.
Key responsibilities
- Provide an expert critical care nursing response to deteriorating and at-risk patients outside of Critical Care 24/7.
- Support patients who step down from Critical Care to the wards.
- Assist in delivering training programmes in emergency response and resuscitation practices to clinical staff.
- Respond as a clinical member of emergency response/resuscitation teams, providing expertise and leadership during cardiac arrest calls.
- Ensure all clinical areas have access to appropriate resuscitation equipment and consumables.
- Contribute to service development through clinical expertise, leadership, education, audit, and quality improvement.
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse
- Relevant post qualification clinical course (critical care) or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years' experience following post qualification relevant course.
- Recognised mentorship / teaching course or equivalent
- A desire to gain instructor status in advanced national courses.
- Experience in managing deteriorating patients.
- Experience in managing level 3 patients
- Experience teaching and responding to learners' individual needs.
- Able to perform a rapid physical assessment of an acutely unwell patient
- Able to formulate an immediate and safe management plan for an acutely unwell patient
- Demonstrate ability to meet Trust Values of safety, kindness, teamwork and improving
- Able to communicate effectively and sensitively: both verbally and in writing
- Able to articulate reasons for desire to work in this clinical area.

Desirable criteria
- Proven Leadership Training e.g. Clinical Leadership Course, NVQ Level 4 and/or minimum 1 year relevant experience in a leadership role or willingness to undertake Leadership course
- Resuscitation Council (UK) ILS provider - adult
- Resuscitation Council (UK), ALS provider
- Have or currently studying for a first degree qualification or equivalent
- Evidence of involvement in research and / or quality improvement projects.
- Understanding of risk management/ governance issues
- Experience in managing cardiac arrests.
- Experience in leading clinical teams
- Experience in delivering multidisciplinary training programmes
- Able to perform venepuncture
- Able to perform peripheral cannulation
- Understanding of governance issues related to resuscitation practices
- To have an understanding of audit and risk assessments and contribute to the development of strategies
- Experience of auditing
- Can translate national / local polices relating to health care delivery in to resuscitation practice
- Evidence of guideline / policy development
- Demonstratable understanding of the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion and/or Knowledge of the NHS obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duties

Deputy Sister / Charge Nurse, Patient Emergency Response and Resuscitation Team @ Queen Square (PERRT@QS)
PERRT@QS (formerly known as the Critical Care Outreach Team at NHNN) is affiliated with the Patient Emergency Response and Resuscitation Team (PERRT) within the wider UCLH Trust; it is a multi-disciplinary team of experienced critical care practitioners that assist in the care of patients who are acutely unwell or who are deteriorating.
This is achieved by supporting, educating and working with ward staff and the multidisciplinary team; optimising the quality and appropriateness of critically ill patients' treatment, care and experience. The team also provides a trust-wide resuscitation service providing a clinical response to cardiac arrest calls and deteriorating patients, contributing to the delivery of specialised resuscitation training and risk management to a variety of acute and specialist hospitals sites in the centre of London.
Main duties of the job
In conjunction with the band 7s and 8a in PERRT@QS, the Deputy Charge Nurse / Sister will assist in the development of the PERRT@QS (and wider PERRT) service and patient safety by:
o Working at an enhanced level / towards an advanced level across the Four Pillars of Advanced Practice.
