Role summary

This role is for an Inpatient Senior Health Care Assistant at New Beginnings, a specialist detoxification unit for drug and alcohol service users. The post holder will provide high-quality support to the clinical team and structured day programme, assisting with admissions, discharges, and patient care under nurse direction. It also involves acting as a first point of contact and supporting patients with various life skills and activities. This position offers an opportunity to complete a Level 3 apprenticeship qualification.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive, high quality support services to the clinical team, under direct supervision, to ensure the smooth safe delivery of services.
  • Support the team in the admissions and discharge process and facilitation of both clinics and group work sessions with patients.
  • Undertake collection of samples and specimens from patients and test as directed, sending samples for testing to the pathology department when required.
  • Assist the Nurse to conduct physical health checks and the management of symptoms through appropriate care planning.
  • Provide harm minimisation advice and promote healthier lifestyles, and support patients in cooking and other life skills.

Essential criteria

  • English and Maths at level 2 or equivalent (GCSE 9-4 or A\*- C or functional skills level 2)
  • NVQ Level 2 in a related subject
  • NVQ level 3 in related subject or willingness to undertake a relevant Level 3 Apprenticeship
  • Demonstrate a keen interest caring for others
  • Previous experience of caring for patients in a clinical setting
  • Previous experience of working as part of a team

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience of supervision of staff
  • Experience working within the drug and alcohol field
  • Understand importance of maintaining confidentiality
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both face to face and in writing
  • Able to support and reassure patients / carers in distress
  • Basic IT skills

Job summary

New Beginnings is a specialist detoxification unit for drug and alcohol service users combined with a structured day programme accessible to service users undergoing detoxification. The staff on the detoxification unit work as part of an integrated team with the structured day care staff to offer a comprehensive and seamless programme to service users.

The post holder will provide high quality support services as part of the inpatient clinical team and structured day programme within Aspire New Beginnings.

To support the clinical and the wider New Beginnings team in the delivery of the service, whilst performing a range of duties under the direction of the nurse/manager in charge.

To act as first point of contact for the service providing an effective information service for professionals and service users.
