Role summary
This role involves working as a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist within the Learning Disability and Forensic directorate, primarily at Broadland Clinic and Little Plumstead Hospital, and across Norfolk within the Norfolk Forensic Community LD team and Intensive Support Service. The post holder will provide SLT assessment and intervention for service users with learning disabilities, complex mental illness, and physical health needs. This includes managing a defined caseload, working as part of a multidisciplinary team, and providing specialist advice and training.
Key responsibilities
- Manage a defined caseload, using evidence-based, person-centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate assessment and intervention work packages.
- Work as an effective, integrated member of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Establish effective communication networks with services users and carers, team members, AHP colleagues and other agencies.
- Provide consultation, specialist risk assessment & risk management recommendations.
- Provide highly specialist advice, support, education and training to increase the capacity and capability of others to work with people with a learning disability.
- Develop Speech and Language Therapy provision within the service with support from the SLT Professional Lead.
Essential criteria
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- State registration with HCPC
- Member of the RCSLT
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Post graduate training in Learning Disabilities, Challenging behaviour and/ or Mental Health
- Specialist knowledge and application of speech and language therapy assessments and interventions
- Detailed knowledge of evidence based practice and its contribution to practice governance
- Extensive clinical experience and ability to demonstrate application of advanced clinical skills
- Ability to facilitate therapist, generic technician and student development through effective supervision
- Planning and coordination of treatment packages
- Leadership and first line management experience
- Participation in research projects and audit
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate training in Dysphagia
- Leadership Training/ Qualification

The post holder will also work across Norfolk within the Norfolk Forensic Community LD (NFC-LD) team and Intensive Support Service (ISS). This role involves offering SLT assessment and intervention for service users with a learning disability and complex and intersecting mental illness and physical health needs. This will be undertaken in partnership with:

The post holder will be line managed within the Learning Disability and Forensic directorate and will be professionally accountable to the Speech and Language Therapy Professional Lead.
