Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a Band 4 Senior Therapy Technical Instructor to join the urgent care and frailty therapy team at Northampton General Hospital. This 3-month fixed-term contract supports winter pressures, working alongside Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and support staff. The role involves completing rapid assessments, providing therapy intervention for safe discharge, and managing your own caseload under indirect supervision. You will work with patients across various medical conditions in the Nye Bevan Assessment Unit, Emergency Department, and Frailty Assessment Unit.
Essential criteria
- Personal portfolio of evidence of work based learning in healthcare
- Or NVQ level 4 in care related topic or good standard of education equivalent to A level or BTec
Desirable criteria
- Foundation degree or equivalent in health related subject.
- A combination of short relevant courses
- Knowledge and Experience
- Working in an acute NHS healthcare environment.
- Significant Experience of working with a broad range of medical conditions and age groups.
- Knowledge and understanding of roles, responsibilities and working practices of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists
- Recognise boundaries of own scope of practice and duty of care, seeking assistance as appropriate
- Understanding of basic anatomy and physiology relevant to Therapy care including muscle groups, gait and skeletal anatomy
- Understanding of the respiratory system and effects on the body and its function
- Basic IT skills including use of email
- Knowledge of the psychosocial elements of healthcare
- Principles of confidentiality
- Experience of working within a community based setting.
- Experience of working in Urgent Care and Frailty setting
- Well-developed communication skills, including interpersonal skills, liaison, influencing and negotiation.
- Ability to work on own without immediate support
- Ability to organise and prioritise own workload
- Ability to delegate and organise others
- Ability to use initiative in addressing own learning needs and appraise own performance
- Basic IT literacy, including use of emails in Microsoft or similar
- Ability to problem solve.

We have an exciting opportunity for a band 4 Senior Therapy Technical Instructor (STTI) to join our established team of therapists to work in the urgent care and frailty therapy team at Northampton General Hospital. This is a 3 month fixed term contract from December 2026 to support with winter pressures.
The team consists of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Support Staff and you will be supported by the qualified staff in the role and encouraged to develop your knowledge and skills. The successful candidate will work alongside the therapy staff and the wider multi-disciplinary team on the Nye Bevan Assessment Unit, the Emergency Department and the Frailty Assessment Unit.
The successful candidate will work autonomously, under the indirect supervision of therapists, to complete rapid assessments of routine patients and provide therapy intervention to enable a safe and timely discharge from the front door. This will also include providing clinical reasoning as to why a patient may not be safe to be discharged at that time.
