Role summary

This Staff Nurse role is based on Newton Ward, a 12-bedded Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit (PICU) that supports patients during acute mental health crises. Key responsibilities

  • Provide high quality, evidence based care within the Mental Health Care Division for service users and their carers within inpatient and community services.
  • Carry out duties as a practitioner under the supervision of a mentor.
  • Function as an associate nurse/named nurse/care coordinator to service users, assisting in assessment, planning and evaluation and review of care, within a recovery focused model of care.
  • Where appropriate, take part in a 24 hour system of rostering including internal rotation.

Essential criteria

  • Appropriate professional qualification by RMN
  • Experience of working with a range of people with mental health problems
  • A demonstrated understanding of Equality and Human Rights
  • Be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge base regarding: Effective Care Co ordination, Care Planning and evaluation, Quality and clinical audit, Health & safety/risk management mental health act
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of the Code of Conduct and the nurse's responsibility to identify gaps in their knowledge base.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the concepts of mentorship, preceptorship and supervision.
  • Able to communicate effectively.
  • Possess good listening and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.

Job summary

Newton Ward is a 12 bedded Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit (PICU) .This is a specialist service that ward supports patients when they are at their most acutely unwell.

We offer person centred psychology and also the opportunity to work along side psychology supporting service users to complete safety planswhich help identify coping strategies and ways to manage their symptoms.We work with occupational therapists completing ward and off ward based assessments to ensure that when a service user has completed theirrecovery that they receive the support they require on discharge.Newton ward has worked closely with the centre for perfect care offering a least restrictive approach and no force first environment that enablespatients to develop positive and trusting relationships with the staff on the ward. Allowing them a familiar and comfortable environment during therecovery process.

You will have the opportunity to develop your clinical skills, completing venepuncture and ECG training becoming familiar with identifying physical health needs in addition to a service users mental health needs.

There are also multiple opportunities to engage in further training such as Arrive, STRIVE, THRIVE and post graduate certification inpsychological interventions.
