Role summary
This role involves providing physics support to the Nuclear Medicine department, assisting Clinical Scientists with routine tasks and service development. Key responsibilities
- Participate in the day-to-day supervision of trainee technical staff assigned to Nuclear Medicine, assisting in the delivery of work-based training.
- Provide expert knowledge in the field of Nuclear Medicine, ensuring that Standard Operating Protocols and other relevant legislation are followed.
- To liaise with the multi-disciplinary team as required in the performance of duties.
- Undertake other duties assigned by the Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics.
- Participate in providing physics support to a high-quality Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine Service, using complex, sophisticated imaging, non-imaging and data processing equipment.
- Manipulate radioactive (gamma and beta emitting radioisotopes) patient samples including blood, faeces and urine.
Essential criteria
- BSc (Hons) Physical Sciences or related subject
- Computer literacy - knowledge of word, excel
- Knowledge of routine Nuclear Medicine procedures
- Awareness of relevant health and safety regulations.
- Able to communicate, both verbally and in writing, complex and sensitive information which requires empathy and reassurance where there are barriers to understanding.
- Communicates instructions to the patient including condition related information and radiation risks to patients and relatives. e.g. cancer patients, paediatrics. Needs to be able to communicate with all levels of staff relaying complex information
- Have skills for assessing and troubleshooting complex issues arising, such as equipment malfunction and radiation protection. Able to perform detailed tasks using complex equipment and processing techniques, under written protocols.
- Able to analyse and judge complex information, acquired from equipment testing results.
- Ability to refer issues to senior staff as appropriate
- Dexterity, co -ordination and sensory skills needed for the dispensing and preparation of phantoms with radioactive materia
- Ability to work at speed with precision eg manipulation of radioactive sources, decontamination procedures etc.
- Use of complex radiation equipment e.g. gamma camera.
- Use of image processing equipment
- Use of laboratory equipment for the assay of specimens.
- Plans and prioritises own workload to run in conjunction with other duties within the department. E.g. lab work, processing.
- Able to demonstrate a commitment to and understanding of the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and respect appropriate to their individual needs.
- All staff are expected to engage in compassionate and inclusive leadership in the provision of high quality care and interactions with others
- Implements new procedures and makes recommendations.

- Acquires Diagnostic data.
- Uses complex image processing software to produce images, curves and data for interpretation
- Uses spreadsheets for specimen analysis
- Must be able to demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trust's Values and Behaviours
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of radiation protection and medical imaging
- Experience of working with patients in a caring capacity
- Be able to use appropriate image processing techniques

Job summary
We have a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join us within our Nuclear Medicine department. The post holder will primarily provide support to the Clinical Scientists within the department with a number of varied and routine tasks and service development, working within a friendly, multi-disciplinary team of physicists, technologists, nurses, radiologists and admin staff.
We currently have a dedicated solid state cardiac gamma camera and four hybrid SPECT CT gamma cameras. We support Sentinel Lymph Node surgery, and carry out a range of molecular radiotherapies, including I-131 ablation, I-131 thyrotoxic, Ra-223 and Lu-177 therapies. We provide technical support to Alliance Healthcare in the provision of a PET/CT service. There are many opportunities for service development and improvement projects.
