Role summary

This role involves providing high-level dental nursing care for patients within King's College Hospital's Department of Community Special Care Dentistry. You will assist clinicians with a full range of dental treatments, ensure infection control, and manage the day-to-day running of the dental clinic. The service caters to patients with physical disabilities, complex medical conditions, learning disabilities, severe mental health conditions, severe anxiety/phobia, and children with complex dental needs, including domiciliary care.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide a high level of dental nursing care for all patients, explaining procedures to patients or carers.
  • Deliver a high standard of chairside assistance, supporting clinicians and maintaining infection control.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day running of the dental clinic.
  • Assist clinicians in the full range of dental treatment and procedures, reporting patient condition changes.
  • Undertake general reception duties, including arranging transport and appointments, and dealing with complaints.
  • Order and receipt stock for the clinic, maintaining appropriate stock controls.

Essential criteria

  • Dental Nursing Qualification
  • Registration with General Dental Council
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety issues including medical emergencies
  • Excellent understanding of infection control and decontamination procedures
  • Dental Nursing experience
  • Ability to be sympathetic and sensitive to patient and staff needs
  • Work well in a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable criteria

  • Competence or qualification in Inhalation Sedation
  • Experience of working with neuro-divergent patients and/or patients with learning disabilities/difficulties
  • Proficient in the use of Dentally software for patient record

Job summary

King's College Hospital's Department of Community Special Care Dentistry is split into 3 geographical Lots and covers the boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark, Merton Sutton and Croydon, Kingston and Richmond and Wandsworth. The main roles of our service are:

o The monitoring of the dental health of all age groups in the population.

o The provision of dental health education and preventive programmes.

o The provision of facilities for a full range of treatment to patients who have experienced difficulty in obtaining treatment in the general dental service, or for whom there is evidence that they would not otherwise seek treatment from the general dental services. Including one or more of the following;

  • physical disability
  • complex medical condition
  • learning disability
  • severe mental health condition
  • Severe anxiety/phobia.
  • Children with complex dental needs

We also provide domiciliary care to people unable to leave their home and our mobile dental unit visits shelters for people without housing.
