Role summary

This Senior Sexual Health Nurse role involves working as part of the Central Lancashire Sexual Health Services Team in Preston. The post holder will assess, plan, and provide sexual health advice, screening, and treatment, including contraception, in a confidential environment. They will also be responsible for coordinating with the Nurse in Charge and Health Care Support Workers and contributing to the development of nursing through supervision and support of junior staff. The role requires working across all areas of Sexual Health Services, including outreach clinics.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide sexual health advice to patients following a positive STI diagnosis, initiate treatments as per PGDs, and implement partner notification.
  • Administer vaccinations and immunisations (e.g., Hepatitis A/B and HPV vaccines) in conjunction with clinical protocol and PGDs.
  • Perform testing and interpret specimens using bench microscopy or be willing to undertake training.
  • Provide sexual health information, advice, teaching, and support to patients regarding contraception.
  • Independently undertake and be responsible for sexual health clinical sessions, assessing patients, taking sexual histories, and formulating diagnoses.
  • Independently perform comprehensive male and female genital examinations and investigative procedures, including HIV testing and cervical cytology.

Essential criteria

  • First level registered nurse
  • DFSRH Qualification or equivalent
  • LoC Sub-Dermal Implants
  • Specialist course or in-house training in STI screening
  • Mentorship / assessment module / training
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Experience of working in nurse led clinics and working to PGDs
  • Multi-disciplinary working
  • Evidence of working with young people and under 16's
  • Experience of clinical audit
  • Proficient in cervical cytology
  • 2 years working in sexual health
  • Ability to independently undertake genital examination and screening tests in both male and female patients including cervical cytology
  • Able to perform venepuncture
  • In depth knowledge of sexual health
  • Knowledge of National and local sexual health strategies
  • Computer Literate
  • Ability to respond to pressure and to prioritise workload
  • Good working knowledge of Clinical Governance agenda
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to Mentor Students

Job summary

The post holder will work as part of the Central Lancashire Sexual Health Services Team in Preston and its surrounding areas and will assess, plan, and provide sexual health advice, screening, and treatment (including contraception) to patients in a supportive confidential environment, recognising when to refer a problem onto a doctor or Specialist Nurse within the service.

The post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating with the support of the Nurse in Charge and Health Care Support Workers within the clinical area.

The Nurse will contribute to the continued development of nursing, including the supervision and support of junior nurses and support staff.

There will be an expectation that the post holder will work across all areas of Sexual Health Services including all outreach clinics as required.
