Role summary

This part-time Assistant Psychologist role is within the Cleft Team of the Psychological Medicine for Children, Young People and Families Service. The post holder will support psychological assessment and intervention under supervision, facilitate group interventions, and undertake audits and data collection. They will also develop resources for clinical work with children and young people. The role requires a strong team ethic, accountability, and the ability to work under pressure in emotive environments.

Essential criteria

  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology.
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.

Desirable criteria

  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.
  • Experience of working with children and young people with emotional difficulties
  • Relevant experience of working in an NHS (or third sector/ local authority) setting.
  • Experience working with children, young people and families specifically in medical settings.
  • Experience of conducting audits.
  • Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated skills in high level communication (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • Demonstrated excellent organisational skills, with an ability to work independently.
  • Experience and ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Knowledge and Understanding
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with physical health conditions.
  • An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to this population.
  • Awareness and application of diversity issues in clinical practice.
  • Other
  • An interest in working with children and families.
  • An interest in working with children and families with a cleft lip or palate
  • A desire to explore a career in Professional Psychology.

Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated part-time Assistant Psychologist to join the Cleft Team within the Psychological Medicine for Children, Young People and Families Service.

This post provides a unique opportunity to work within a large team of Clinical Psychologists (and other related professions). The post holder will have access to a diverse range of CPD and supervision opportunities, including group systemic supervision.

The post holder will: support psychological assessment and intervention under the supervision of a qualified Clinical Psychologist; will be involved in the development and facilitation of group interventions for children, young people and their families; will undertake audits and data collection

Including input and analysis where appropriate; work creatively to develop resources for use within clinical work with children and young people.

The ideal candidate will have a strong team work ethic, sense of accountability, accompanied by an ability to work under considerable pressure and within highly emotive environments at times. They will need to be able to use their own initiative and work reliably and consistently under supervision.
