Role summary
Whipps Cross University Hospital is seeking a compassionate and motivated Senior Maternity Healthcare Support Worker (HCA) Band 3 to join their Maternity Department. This role involves undertaking delegated clinical tasks such as routine maternal observations, assisting with personal care, and supporting patient nutrition and hydration. Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential to ensure patient comfort, wellbeing, and safety. New recruits will receive support to complete Band 3 competencies within six months.
Key responsibilities
- Work as an integral part of the maternity team, meeting patient and service needs.
- Undertake a range of delegated clinical tasks, including routine maternal observations.
- Assist with personal care and mobility for patients.
- Support patients' and newborn nutritional and hydration needs.
- Develop essential competencies through training and practice to ensure safety and quality.
Essential criteria
- Completion of L3 Care Certificate or equivalent experience of undertaking short courses related to patient/clinical care duties.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills (English and Math's GCSEs or equivalent.)
- Evidence of ongoing personal and professional development
- Demonstrable experience of working in a clinical healthcare setting.
- Experience of dealing with the public.
- Evidence of providing high quality care.
- To be aware of incident reporting systems and escalation processes.
- Evidence of effective interpersonal skills.
- Evidence of good organizational skills.
- Self-motivated to work under minimal direct supervision.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Good communication skills, written and verbal.
- Basic keyboard/ computer skills (e.g. ability to enter patient data onto computer records).
- Contributes to updating patient records and disseminating information appropriately.
- To always protect and maintain patient confidentiality and follow information governance policies and procedures.
- Awareness of health and safety at work. e.g: manual handling skills, infection control measures.
- Ability to collect and exchange factual information and data to the multidisciplinary team and ensure data accuracy.
Desirable criteria
- L3 HCSW apprenticeship
- Prepared to undertake further training to develop the necessary competencies and skills.
- Depending on specific service arrangements, to supervise and train more junior staff.
