Role summary

The Macmillan Patient Support Officer will join the Macmillan Nursing Support Team and Macmillan Centre to support people in Croydon affected by cancer. Key responsibilities

  • Provide direct emotional, practical, and financial information and support to people affected by cancer.
  • Work flexibly, being visible and accessible to service users.
  • Deliver support face to face, over the phone, via email, letter, and text.
  • Coordinate with appropriate services to maximise the delivery of cancer pathways.
  • Support both the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Team and the Macmillan Information & Support Centre Team in providing personalised cancer care.

Essential criteria

  • Educated to GCSE level
  • Educated to NVQ Level 4 or equivalent level of knowledge / experience in the healthcare environment
  • Understanding of medical terminology
  • Good working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Mentions cancer in their application
  • Proven experience as a medical secretary/ clinical administrator/coordinator or clinical support worker in a health service environment
  • Experience of working with complex and sensitive issues on a day to day basis, including contact with patients who may be distressed and have barriers to understanding.
  • To be able to effectively communicate across different care settings/ care providers.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Able to demonstrate initiative and flexibility
  • Able to work under pressure

  • Willingness to undertake further education and training applicable to the role including diploma and degree level study.

Job summary

The Macmillan Nursing Support Team and the Macmillan Centre are looking for an experienced and dynamic new colleague to join our growing services supporting the people of Croydon affected by cancer.

The purpose of the role will be to support patients through their cancer pathway and beyond; to navigate the complex health and social care system during this time.

As a Macmillan Cancer Patient Support Officer, you will have direct contact with people affected by cancer, offering emotional, practical and financial information and support.

You will work flexibly, being visible and accessible to those who access the services. You will provide support face to face, over the phone, via email, letter and text.

Join us and we will provide a comprehensive induction programme, including, training and insight visits. We also fully support long term access to both in-house and external training. Supervision is fully supported and in addition to this you will have regular support sessions with the team and your peers.

We recognise that this can be an emotionally challenging role and we actively encourage access to wellbeing support sessions.
