Role summary
This role is for a Quality Improvement (QI) Coach within the Academy of Research and Improvement, focusing on the Culture of Care Programme in Mental Health inpatient services. The successful candidate will provide expert QI leadership, coaching, and support, helping to design, deliver, and evaluate QI training and improvement initiatives. Key responsibilities
- Provide specialist QI advice, coaching and training to teams involved in the Culture of Care Programme and wider improvement activity.
- Lead and support complex and large-scale improvement initiatives across Mental Health inpatient services using recognised QI methodologies.
- Design, deliver and evaluate accessible, high-quality QI training, workshops and learning sessions.
- Work with clinical and operational teams, patients, carers and people with lived experience to embed co-production.
- Support teams to use data, insight and feedback to identify improvement opportunities, test changes, measure impact and plan for sustainability.
- Facilitate shared learning through reports, presentations, events, communications and Academy resources.
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
- Formal training in Quality Improvement methodologies (e.g. Model for Improvement, Lean, Six Sigma, Human Factors)
- Significant experience leading or supporting QI projects in a healthcare setting
- Experience of coaching individuals and teams in QI methods
- Experience of delivering training or workshops
- Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams
- In-depth understanding of QI methodologies and tools
- Knowledge of NHS improvement priorities, policies, and regulatory frameworks
- Understanding of data for improvement and measurement for change
- Excellent facilitation, coaching, and influencing skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly to a range of audiences
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work autonomously
- Skilled in using data to drive improvement
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualification in improvement science, leadership, or healthcare management
- Coaching or facilitation qualification
- Experience of working across organisational boundaries
- Experience of using QI tools in complex systems or at scale
- Experience of engaging patients and service users in improvement work
- Knowledge of behavioural science, change management, or implementation science
- Familiarity with digital tools for QI (e.g. SPC charts, QI Life, Life QI)
- Ability to design and evaluate improvement programmes
- Ability to build improvement capability in others through mentoring and training

Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Academy of Research and Improvement as a Quality Improvement (QI) Coach, providing expert QI leadership, coaching and support to the Culture of Care Programme across Mental Health inpatient services.
The role will work in partnership with the Culture of Care Programme Board, clinical and operational teams, people with lived experience, and the Head of Improvement and Participation to design, deliver and evaluate a programme of QI training, coaching and improvement support.
You will help build sustainable improvement capability across Mental Health wards, supporting teams to use evidence-based QI methods, measurement for improvement, co-production and creative engagement approaches to achieve improvements in healthcare for patients, carers and staff.
As part of the Academy of Research and Improvement, you will work alongside colleagues in quality improvement, participation, research, clinical effectiveness, communications, and knowledge services to promote integrated working, share learning and support a culture of continuous improvement across the Trust.
