Role summary
This role is for a compassionate Healthcare Support Worker to join the dedicated hospice team at Florence Nightingale Hospice. You will provide high-quality, person-centred palliative and end-of-life care to patients and vital comfort to their families. Working alongside a multidisciplinary clinical team, you will ensure dignity, comfort, and peace for patients. The hospice is a 10-bedded unit located in the grounds of Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
Key responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, person-centred palliative and end-of-life care to patients.
- Provide vital comfort to patients' families.
- Work alongside a multidisciplinary clinical team to ensure dignity, comfort, and peace for patients.
- Display a compassionate, empathic approach to the delivery of care to patients admitted for symptom control, review and reassessment and end of life care.
- Provide emotional support to families and carers.
- Provide nursing care to patients receiving Palliative Care under the delegation and supervision of a registered nurse.
Essential criteria
- Level 2 or Level 3 (NVQ) in health and Social Care or equivalent relevant experience
- Willing to work towards Level 2 functional skills (Math & English
- Care Certificate or working towards
- Experience of working with people, ideally in a front-line customer service role.
- An understanding of the importance of patient confidentiality and privacy.
- Good understanding of care needs relevant to patients in a hospital setting to include: oEating and drinking oDignity and respect oCommunication / conflict resolution oHandwashing and infection control oHygiene needs oSafeguarding

- Experience of providing person-centred care

Active listening skills and good communication skills are an important aspect of this role, along with the ability to remain calm and resilient under emotional pressure.
Main duties of the job
To provide nursing care to patients receiving Palliative Care under the delegation and supervision of a registered nurse.
We provide a 24/7 service at Florence Nightingale Hospice, and the post holder will be rostered to cover long-days
