Role summary
This role is for an enthusiastic Staff Nurse or ODP to join the Endoscopy Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. You will be responsible for pre-assessing patients for endoscopic procedures and managing their pathway, as well as supporting patients through their procedure. The role involves working as part of a highly-skilled team and maintaining endoscopic equipment to high standards. Endoscopy experience is beneficial but not essential, and the department offers world-class training.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, co-ordinate and implement endoscopy sessions appropriate to service needs.
- Carry out and record accurate medical and nursing histories, including appropriate tests and investigations.
- Evaluate provision of endoscopy service by means of audit and initiate changes as appropriate.
- Assist in setting and monitoring standards of care, ensuring nursing practice is audited and research/evidence based.
- Facilitate the development of a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
- Provide clinical expertise and advice to other staff and facilitate training and development to the multi-disciplinary team where appropriate.
Essential criteria
- 1st Level Registration.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and demonstrate leadership skills.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and problem solving skills.
Desirable criteria
- Teaching & Assessment Qualification
- Working towards a diploma/degree in a health related subject.
- IT skills
- Cannulation/Phlebotomy skills.
- Previous experience in an endoscopy environment.
- Previous experience of pre-assessment services or related disciplines.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, caring Staff Nurse or ODP to join us in the Endoscopy Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.
Endoscopy is a fast-paced specialist service that offers a unique nursing experience. We are committed to offering world class endoscopy training and are subscribed to the JAG JETs training system which provides our nurses with nationally recognised accreditation for the skills and knowledge they acquire during their development pathway.
We are a JAG accredited Bowel Cancer Screening centre and are proud of the standards we have achieved.
The successful candidate will be part of a highly-skilled team responsible for the pre assessment of patients requiring an endoscopic procedure as well as working in the endoscopy department.
The successful candidate will need to possess excellent communication and organisational skills, be able to demonstrate leadership skills, work proactively as part of a successful team and demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills. They must also be able to manage their time effectively and work flexibly to meet the ever-changing requirements of the service both within the department and also Trust-wide.
