Role summary
This role is for an experienced and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to join a temporary bank team. You will work with school-aged children in mainstream schools, supporting those with speech, language, and communication needs. The position involves providing high-quality specialist Speech and Language Therapy within an educational setting. It offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children's communication, learning, and participation.
Key responsibilities
- Provide assessment, diagnosis, appropriate intervention and discharge for children within the role.
- Work closely with children, families and other professionals, providing advice regarding clinical management.
- Support the delivery of a wide range of school aged intervention packages in designated locality community & school settings.
- Understand and meet professional and legal SEND responsibilities outlined in the Children and Families Act 2014.
- Contribute to statutory assessments of special educational needs and delivery of Speech and Language Therapy provision as specified in children's EHCPs.
Essential criteria
- Degree and Licence to Practise from the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
- Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT
- Experience of supporting CYP, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments), contribution to the annual review process and delivery of SLT provision as specified in Education health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
- Collaborative work with parents and other professionals
- Experience Training others
- Working with children in clinics and/or school based settings
- Understanding of typical child development Speech and Language, Play and other milestones
- Good working knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for school aged CYP with Speech, Language and Communication needs and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual CYP
- Understanding and application of Education Practice and Policy including the Children and Families Act 2014
- Understanding of Religious, Cultural and Linguistic issues impacting upon caseload management
- Awareness of national policies and procedures (relevant to the Education) Knowledge of the principles of audit
- Good understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group)
- Up to date knowledge of professional standards of record keeping
- Holistic view of communication problems and philosophy to back this
- Ability to organise and manage own caseload independently and support other more junior staff manage their caseload
- Working in partnership with other members of the MDT
- Working in collaboration with children and young people, parents/carers and families
- Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment diagnosis and treatment of children with a broad range of speech, language and communication difficulties
- Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
- Manual dexterity sufficient to carry out swallowing assessment and use of high and low technical assessment equipment
- Valuing and advocating for all communication styles and preferences
- Understanding of child development including Speech and Language, Play and other milestones
- Knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for children with Speech, Language and Communication needs and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual children
- Able to maintain prolonged concentration in order to assess the speech, language and communication skills of CYP using formal and informal assessments
- To be occupational health cleared for the role specified.
- IT literate and able to use a range of specialist programmes
