Role summary

This is a permanent, part-time Senior Healthcare Science Assistant position within the Cardiology Service at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves performing basic cardiac investigations like 12-lead ECGs and fitting/removing ambulatory monitors, working under the supervision of qualified Cardiac Physiologists. The successful candidate will join a friendly team, receive structured work-based training, and contribute to providing high-quality patient care for people with heart conditions. Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional attitude are essential.

Key responsibilities

  • Undertake assessment and recording of basic cardiac investigations (including 12 Lead ECG and Ambulatory ECG & BP Monitors) and basic patient clinical observations.
  • Perform 12 Lead Electrocardiogram (ECG) and lying/standing blood pressure measurements.
  • Fit and remove Ambulatory ECG and BP monitors.
  • Recognise normal and abnormal heart rhythms at a basic interpretation level and identify situations needing senior attention.
  • Check technical quality and calibration of basic equipment and report adverse findings.

Essential criteria

  • 3 GSCEs grade C or above including maths, English & science
  • Working in a healthcare environment with direct patient care
  • Experience of working in a busy multi-disciplinary team.
  • ECG in practice and underpinning knowledge
  • Competent in practical recording of an ECG
  • Competent in fitting/ removing ambulatory ECG/ BP monitors
  • Recognises normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms and blood pressure readings
  • Policies, practices and procedures e.g. NHS national policies, standards, requirements and directions that relate to measuring and improving the quality and safety of patient care

Desirable criteria

  • NVQ level 2 in Health Care Science
  • SCST Award in Practical Electrocardiography or other equivalent recognition of competency to record ECGs
