Role summary

This is an opportunity for a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join the Long-Term Ventilation (LTV) and Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) team at Barts Health NHS Trust. The role involves providing expert support for children and young people with home mechanical ventilation needs, including those with tracheostomies and nasal pharyngeal airways. The CNS will lead in establishing effective transitional and home care packages, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and offering education and training to families and staff. The position requires leadership in managing a respiratory patient cohort and working autonomously while supporting the wider team.

Key responsibilities

  • Take a significant leadership role in supporting the highest level of quality expert practice and support for children and young people with home mechanical ventilation (HMV) needs and their families.
  • Look after children with Tracheostomies and Nasal Pharyngeal Airways as part of the LTV caseload.
  • Liaise, participate, and interact with complex multidisciplinary and multiagency teams to establish effective transitional and home care packages.
  • Work collaboratively and autonomously, offering authoritative, supplementary, and complementary practical support to children and families within the caseload.
  • Provide a significant level of education, training, and leadership to increase the capacity and capability of the service and individual families.
  • Lead and manage your own respiratory patient cohort and work effectively alongside the MDT and other LTV CNS's.

Essential criteria

  • Registered Paediatric Nurse.
  • Intravenous accreditation.
  • Mentorship course or equivalent teaching qualification
  • Specialist Clinical Course in Respiratory
  • Level 3 safeguarding training

Desirable criteria

  • Working towards relevant degree or masters
  • Experience of caseload management
  • Experience of Home oxygen patients.
  • Experience with Home mechanical Ventilated and non-invasive ventilated patients.
  • Experienced with managing patients with Sleep Disordered breathing and those requiring home mechanical chronic ventilator management.
  • Experience of tracheostomy and nasal prong patients
  • Post registration experience including recent experience within the appropriate specialty.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the safeguarding process
  • Experience of working with students and facilitating their learning needs.
  • Experience of change management.
  • Research and audit
  • Evidence of participation in organized teaching and study days representing the trust and networking.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to work within the nursing team to ensure good clinical/non-clinical outcomes.
  • The ability to communicate with patients in an empathetic manner regarding their treatment and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently as well as work with a wider MDT/multi-agency team in a complex and changing environment
