Role summary

This role is for an Assistant General Manager in the Radiology Department, supporting operational leadership and performance management. You will help deliver against national and local targets, drive service improvement, and manage workforce activities. The position involves monitoring performance data, developing improvement plans, and collaborating with clinical and operational teams to enhance service quality and patient experience. It's an opportunity for an aspiring leader to develop management skills in a fast-paced NHS environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the operational leadership and performance management of Radiology services.
  • Ensure delivery against national and local targets, including RTT and cancer pathway standards.
  • Drive service improvement and transformation initiatives.
  • Monitor and analyse performance data, developing recovery and improvement plans.
  • Support workforce management activities including recruitment, appraisal and staff development.
  • Deputise for the General Manager as required.

Essential criteria

  • GCSE English and Maths to C grade or higher
  • Experience of working in an NHS operational, administrative or service delivery role within a busy healthcare environment.
  • Experience of supporting team coordination, workload prioritization, rota cover or staff supervision
  • Experience of managing or contributing to complaints investigations, preparing clear and timely responses, and ensuring learning is translated into service improvement actions.
  • Broad knowledge of the delivery of health services.
  • In-depth knowledge of cancer and 18-week RTT targets and their application.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of techniques for planning, monitoring and controlling projects and programmes.
  • Able to work independently, use initiative and prioritise own and others' workloads within agreed objectives.
  • Can work under pressure and respond to short timescales, delivering work on time and with accuracy.
  • Ability to lead, manage and motivate staff, command respect and create a strong sense of community within a team.
  • Benefits-, target- and results-oriented, with a clear focus on service outcomes and continuous improvement.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and relevant project management software to produce high-quality reports for Divisional and Trust Boards and other audiences.
  • Acts as a role model and lead by example to reinforce the Trust's values and behaviours throughout the area of responsibility.
  • Organised, proactive and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Demonstrates a patient-focused approach, with commitment to quality, safety, confidentiality and inclusive working.
  • Creative and flexible, with the resilience to adapt to changing operational priorities.
  • Communicates professionally and sensitively, including when responding to patients or families raising concerns or complaints.

Desirable criteria

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent level of knowledge, training and experience in an NHS operational or administrative environment.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development such as attendance at management training (I Lead, I Manage)
  • Previous experience in a relevant speciality
  • Knowledge of capacity and demand modelling, with evidence of successful implementation.
  • Knowledge and experience of managing complaints, concerns and patient feedback in accordance with Trust policy, including investigation, drafting responses, identifying themes and implementing learning.
  • Analyse performance data to identify risks and areas for improvement, support recovery actions and present updates clearly.

Assistant General Manager Radiology, Band 6 (30 hours a week)

We are seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Assistant General Manager to join our Radiology Department within the Diagnostics and Specialties Division.

This is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring operational leader to develop their management experience within an NHS environment.
