Role summary
This role involves leading and managing the nursing team on a ward or department, ensuring high standards of patient care and adherence to NMC and Trust policies. The Junior Sister/Charge Nurse will act as a clinical role model, support staff development, and maintain a safe learning environment. Key responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, as well as deputising for the Matron when required. The post holder will also contribute to clinical audits and quality assurance.
Key responsibilities
- Continually assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based programmes of care.
- Personally deliver a high standard of care to patients, acting as a team leader and clinical role model.
- Lead the nursing team, participating in recruitment, selection, and orientation of new staff.
- Deputise for the Matron in their absence, seeking advice where appropriate.
- Ensure all Trust/Directorate nursing policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Monitor and evaluate the standard of care delivered through quality assurance tools and clinical audit.
Essential criteria
- 1st level registration with NMC
- Experience or working in an acute medical setting or respiratory setting.
- ENB 998 or equivalent
- To have 3 years post registration experience in an acute medical setting preferably orthopaedic geriatric ward.
- To have experience of working in a teaching environment.
- Demonstrable interest in commitment to the development of others.
- To demonstrate up to date knowledge of relevant current nursing issues. I.e. managing patients with fracture neck of femur.
- Ability to organise and manage day to day departmental activities.
- Skills in managing patient with acute respiratory conditions.
- Good understanding of the concepts of clinical governance.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of continuing professional development to degree level or willing to achieve.
- Post registration Course in desired field- Orthopaedic geriatric
- To demonstrate up to date knowledge of relevant current nursing issues. I.e. managing patients with fracture neck of femur.
- Knowledge of clinical audits.
- Computer literacy.
- Experience as a Clinical Supervisor.
- Knowledge and understanding of NICE, and NHS guidance for patients with fracture neck of femur, acutely medically ill patients and leadership.

Accountable to Head of Nursing
To be responsible for the planning, provision and delivery of an effective, 24-hour nursing service for the ward / department area. To manage, support and develop the ward / department team and ensure that nursing practice and procedures conform to identified NMC and Trust policies and standards.
To be a role model for all staff and ensure that the ward environment is a safe and effective learning area for staff and student nurses.
To be an advanced clinical practitioner and support and direct the educational and training needs of the nursing team to enable the provision of a patient focused, evidence / research based nursing service.
To be responsible for making the patient the focus of care within the ward environment.
