Role summary
This role is for an enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist to join a paediatric psychology team, specifically working within paediatric epilepsy and healthy futures psychology services. The post holder will support the psychological needs of young people with epilepsy, non-epileptic seizures, and excessive weight, working closely with experienced qualified psychologists. Duties include direct clinical work, data analysis, audits, service evaluations, neuropsychological assessments, and delivering psychological interventions under supervision. This fixed-term contract offers excellent experience for those considering Clinical Psychology training.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and prioritise own workload under the overall supervision of a clinically qualified psychologist.
- Communicate complex information sensitively.
- Work with individuals who have experienced or may experience emotional distress, maintaining professionalism.
- Receive regular clinical supervision from a senior clinical psychologist.
- Contribute to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care for clients.
- Use various methods to communicate complex information, including trust-approved interpreters, written/diagrammatic information, audiotapes, and role-plays.
Essential criteria
- Good (2:1 or higher) honours degree in psychology or 2:2 undergraduate degree plus an additional psychology related qualification
- Eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of British Psychological Society (BPS)
- Postgraduate level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as used by the profession
- Previous experience applicable to the role
- Able to communicate effectively (both written and oral) complex, technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS
- Ability to demonstrate reflection and learning from experience to date
- Ability to use statistical packages, databases and spreadsheets

Desirable criteria
- Experience of providing psychological care and treatment, within the context of a multi-disciplinary team and under supervision of a Clinical Psychologist

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist to join an established paediatric psychology team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant and friendly team of seven Clinical Psychologists within the Paediatric Department at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital; serving the specialties of diabetes, gastroenterology, cystic fibrosis, oncology, rheumatology, NICU, healthy futures (formally known as childhood excessive weight service (CEW)); and epilepsy. This role is specifically to work within the paediatric epilepsy and the healthy futures psychology services.
This role contributes to supporting the psychological needs of young people with epilepsy, non-epileptic seizures and excessive weight. The post holder will work closely with experienced qualified psychologists. Our work is incredibly varied; and includes assessment and therapy for individuals and their families who might be receiving challenging news, or managing long-term conditions and health difficulties. Alongside this we regularly provide advice, consultation, and training to our wider MDT teams.
