Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a Maternity Support Worker to join the Maternity Team at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. The role involves providing support to pregnant people and their families to successfully quit smoking, contributing to Welsh Government's smoke-free agenda. The successful candidate will undergo training and induction, working as part of a team to deliver both face-to-face and telephone support. This position aims to improve the health of birthing people and their families.
Key responsibilities
- Complete training and induction programme.
- Support the Public Health Specialist Midwife to implement the smoke free pregnancy initiative.
- Educate pregnant women about the benefits of stopping smoking and provide support to those wanting to quit.
- Promote smoke free homes and advise on passive smoking and its risks.
- Provide smoking cessation support in line with evidence-based practices and pathways.
- Deliver flexible support including home visits, phone calls, texts, and emails.
- Conduct Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring and investigate high readings.
- Determine nicotine dependency, advise on stop smoking medication, and work with pharmacists.
- Develop action plans with clients, organise and deliver smoking cessation support using motivational interviewing techniques.
- Maintain accurate records in databases like Quit Manager and file records on maternity notes.
Essential criteria
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to keep accurate records
- Understanding policy & procedures of patient confidentiality and safeguarding
- GCSE level English and Mathematics or equivalent NVQ 3 or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through a combination of accredited training, short courses and experience
- Experience of providing healthcare advice or promoting healthy lifestyle advice to patients or members of the public
- Ability to work independently and part of a team
- Experience of providing health support and/or counselling on a one-to-one basis or group
- The post holder must demonstrate a positive commitment to uphold diversity and equality policies approved by the Trust.
- Able to travel throughout the geographical area covered by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in a timely manner
- Able to deal with moderate physical activity e.g., transportation of equipment or resources.
- Good IT skills including Outlook, Microsoft packages and spreadsheets
- Evidence of ability to work as a team member and ability to work independently with individuals, in line with agreed pathways and protocols
- Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service
- Ability to present a non-judgemental demeanour, be polite and professional
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload according to service needs
- Good motivational negotiating skills Assertive and confident
Desirable criteria
- Welsh Language Speaking & Listening Skills (Level 3 and above/B2)
- Experience of communicating on telephone with the public giving support, advice or information
- Recognised qualification in counselling or behavioural change
- Child protection level 2 - Making Every Contact Count (MECC) level 2
- Experience of developing and delivering successful health promotion interventions
- Experiencing of handling a caseload and examples of ability to manage your workload
- A record of working in Maternity services, with pregnant women or other social settings where public health support has been provided
- A basic understanding of audit and quality improvement

Smoking Cessation - Help Me Quit for Baby Maternity Support Worker
Exciting opportunity for someone to join the Maternity Team in CTMUHB in a Public Health Support worker role providing support to pregnant people and their families to successfully quit smoking .
After a period of training and induction the successful candidate will work as part of a team of Specialist Maternity Support Workers providing a hybrid service of face to face and telephone support.
Directly accountable to the Public Health Specialist Midwife the role includes working with other agencies and professionals including midwives, community pharmacists, the Help Me Quit team and other members of the maternity service.
This role will help improve the health of our birthing people and their families in line with Welsh Government 's Public Health agenda and addressing the aim of developing a Smoke free Wales by 2030. There will be 1 full time position although a job share maybe considered.
