Role summary

This is a part-time Neonatal Medical Secretary role at Royal Gwent Hospital, providing confidential secretarial services to Consultant Neonatologists and their team. The successful candidate will manage and prioritise their own workload, working independently within defined policies. It requires an organised, motivated individual with excellent audio-typing and interpersonal skills, and a sound knowledge of medical terminology. The working days are fixed on Thursday and Friday.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide a full confidential secretarial service to Consultant Neonatologists and the team.
  • Carry out duties as defined by the Service Administration Manager to meet the needs of the service.
  • Manage and prioritise own workload.
  • Work independently to defined policies and procedures.
  • Provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support across the department as required.

Essential criteria

  • Able to deal with patients in a sympathetic manner
  • Able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy
  • English language GCSE, 'O' level or equivalent
  • Knowledge of secretarial procedures to level 3 or equivalent
  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Working in a secretarial post
  • Excellent communication / telephone skills
  • Prioritise workload
  • Exercising judgement to solve problems
  • Ability to work with staff at all levels
  • Methodical, able to demonstrate attention to detail
  • Reliable and flexible to meet the needs of the service
  • Team player, but able to work on own initiative

Desirable criteria

  • AMSPAR Diploma
  • CWS, Welsh PAS and MedSecs knowledge
  • RSA III or equivalent
  • NHS experience
  • MedSec experience
  • Ability to speak Welsh
  • Able to travel between hospital sites
