Role summary
This specialist Speech and Language Therapist role works within the stroke multidisciplinary team, providing enhanced skills for post-stroke speech, communication, and swallowing problems. The successful candidate will conduct specialist clinical assessments, management, and rehabilitation plans. They will also support mental capacity assessments and advise the MDT on risks and prognosis. Opportunities to participate in video-fluoroscopy clinics and FEES service are available.
Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech and Language Qualification -Degree or equivalent.
- Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council.
- Post Graduate Dysphagia Qualification or equivalent in-house training to RCSLT Competencies or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
- Evidence of Completion of relevant specialist short courses or equivalent in-house training.
- Experience of working with a wide range of acquired communication and swallowing disorders within an acute or community setting.
- Experience of supporting junior staff, students or clinical assistants.
- Experience of running training sessions on communication and/or swallowing issues to other health and social care professionals.
- Knowledge of varying approaches to the assessment and management of patients with dysphagia including instrumental assessments (Video fluoroscopy / FEES).
- Knowledge of adult communication impairments and swallowing problems to a specialist level.
- Demonstrates ability to be a good team member as well as to work independently and manage own caseload
- Standard key board skills & the ability to use IT packages such as Word, Outlook, Power point & Excel
- Aptitudes
- Accepts responsibility and accountability for own work and can define the responsibilities of others
- Recognises the limits of own authority within the role
- Seeks and uses professional support appropriately
- Understands the principle of confidentiality
- Ability to cope with emotionally demanding situations, monitor and manage own stress levels and seek support as required
- Strong belief in CPD and reflective practice.

This exciting post would suit an SLT with existing experience including in another setting. We would consider part or full time. We would also consider a development post, where full training would be given to meet the requirements of this role.
This role will provide specialist skills on to the stroke unit, supporting both communication and swallowing. There will be opportunities to participate in the regular video-fluoroscopy clinics and FEES service.
The Speech and Language therapy team at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust are a friendly and supportive team. We have regular cross-site team meetings with a strong focus on CPD, on a range of dysphagia and communication topics.
