Role summary
This role involves supporting families with infant feeding choices, from pregnancy through to introducing solid foods and establishing healthy eating habits in the first year. The Nutrition Peer Support Worker will promote and support breastfeeding through various contacts, facilitate groups, and provide health promotion interventions. They will work as part of a skill-mix team within Nottingham City's Children's Public Health 0-19 Nursing Service, adhering to clinical guidelines and promoting healthy lifestyles for families.
Key responsibilities
- Undertake Healthy Child Programme infant and maternal nutrition and breastfeeding public health interventions.
- Provide nutrition peer support to pregnant and postnatal women, adhering to UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative guidance.
- Coordinate and deliver breastfeeding support contacts and facilitate infant nutrition groups and clinics.
- Plan and deliver breastfeeding and healthy lifestyle nutrition health promotion initiatives.
- Undertake breastfeeding assessments and escalate concerns to Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN).
- Maintain contemporaneous healthcare records using SystmOne and work within the limitations of the role.
Essential criteria
- Educated to NVQ Level 3, or equivalent in a healthcare / childcare related area or able to demonstrate significant relevant previous experience.
- Good basic numeracy and literacy to GCSE level (A-C or 9-4) or equivalent.
- Good computer literacy skills
- An ability to plan and organise own workload and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to support and supervise volunteer workers.
- Evidence of understanding of confidential and sensitive issues including GDPR and data protection legislation.
- A good standard of written and spoken English
- An ability to interpret and work within the parameters of standard operating procedures, care pathways and other policies and procedures
- An ability to use Microsoft Office programmes, including MS Outlook and MS Word
- Personal Experience of breastfeeding a baby
- Experience of working in a skill mix team and carrying out delegated work.
- Experience of using electronic record keeping systems and contributing to updating records.
Desirable criteria
- Awareness of local and national childrens public health agendas
- Previous knowledge of SystmOne and use of health care records.
- An understanding of the Healthy Child Programme (DH 2009)
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of child protection and safeguarding procedures.
- Group facilitation skills and experience
- Experience of working in health care and primary care setting
- Experience of working in childrens services

Nottingham CityCare Partnership Childrens Public Health 0-19 Nursing Service are looking for a Nutrition Peer Support Worker.
You will be based in one of our 8 teams who support children, young people and families from the antenatal period, through the first early years and then with their health when the children are at school.
We deliver the Healthy Child Programme ensuring children are growing and developing healthily, meeting their milestones and ensuring they have the best start in life.
We refer and signpost to other appropriate agencies/ professionals/ resources for help when needed. Where there are identified additional needs we work with agencies such as Early Help and Social Care to protect and safeguard babies, children and young people.
We are looking for someone, who has personal experience of breastfeeding, to join our teams of Health Visitors, School Nurses, Family Nurses and support staff working in a think family way, working together to support families to feed their baby their way while enjoying healthier lifestyles.
