Role summary
This role involves providing high-quality administrative support to the Trust's research governance function, assisting with the set-up, approval, and ongoing management of diverse research studies. The post holder will ensure governance processes comply with regulatory and organisational requirements, working closely with researchers and clinical teams. Key responsibilities include coordinating approval processes, managing governance documentation, and maintaining accurate study records. The ideal candidate will have excellent organisational and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy environment.

- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
- An understanding of GCP guidelines/EU directives
- An understanding of research processes in the NHS including research governance and regulations relating to research practice.

- Knowledge of medical terminology
- An understanding of GCP guidelines/EU directives
- Advanced understanding of Microsoft applications for managing and analysing information, e.g. Word and Excel
- Motivation for research
- Ability to work under own initiative and independently within and outside of the department without direct supervision.
- Able to prioritise tasks and cope with deadlines.
- Works autonomously based on following clearly defined procedures and prioritising work in accordance with business need/strategy.
- Good organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to coordinate multiple projects at various stages of development.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including team working.
- Good interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.
- Tenacity and a proactive approach to work
- Using NHS on-line forms and databases (for example LPMS, R-Peak, Edge, IRAS, HIS)
- Relevant experience in conducting or organising clinical research trials, including governance experience.
- Experience of office administration
- Previous experience of working in the NHS.
- Previous experience of establishing office systems and procedures
- Able to demonstrate equivalent level of knowledge, skills and understanding in Research & Development
- GCSE level Maths and English or equivalent experience
- Educated to at least NVQ 4 or equivalent experience.
- Educated to degree level in life sciences or health related discipline, or a degree in another field with experience in clinical trials.
- Good Clinical Practice certificate

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic Research Support Officer to join the Research Governance team within the Research and Development Department. This is an exciting opportunity to support the growth of clinical research across Wigan Borough and help increase access to innovative treatments and therapies for local communities.
The post holder will provide high-quality administrative support to the Trust's research governance function, assisting with the set-up, approval and ongoing management of a diverse portfolio of research studies. Working closely with researchers, clinical teams, sponsors and external partners, they will help ensure governance processes are delivered efficiently and in line with regulatory and organisational requirements.
The successful candidate will have excellent organisational and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy environment. Previous administrative experience is essential, while experience within the NHS, clinical research, or higher education would be advantageous.
