Role summary
This Band 5 Staff Nurse role is on a complex multi-specialty surgical ward, caring for patients recovering from colorectal, upper GI, sarcoma, and urology surgeries. The role involves managing 6-9 patients, ensuring accurate records, and facilitating safe discharge. You will also act as a patient advocate and assist with student nurse training. Previous surgical ward experience in an acute secondary NHS care setting is essential.
Key responsibilities
- Care for patients who have undergone complex or challenging surgery across four specialities (colorectal / upper GI / urology / sarcoma).
- Be responsible for between 6 and 9 patients, ensuring accurate records and appropriate action for recovery and discharge.
- Act promptly and take effective action if any patients become critically unwell.
- Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring a patient-focused approach to care.
- Help with the training and development of Student Nurses, ensuring safe practice.
Essential criteria
- *Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register i.e. ( Adult / Child / Learning Disability or Mental Health)
- *Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses / or post graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post registration experience
- *Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months)
- *Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
- * Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct and the proficiencies and standards for registered nurses can apply this to undergraduate training or post graduate practice
- *Being an accountable professional
- *Promoting health and preventing ill health
- *Assessing needs and planning care
- *Providing and evaluating care
- *Leading and managing nursing care and working in teams -- including prioritisation and delegation skills
- *Coordinating care and responding to deteriorating health
- *Improving safety and quality of care
- *Awareness of current relevant clinical and professional issues and NHS policy
- *Understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding and Mental Capacity

Job summary
We are currently recruiting for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to work on our complex multi-specialty surgical 36-bedded ward on Harborne Hospital Level 4 (part of CDG 9A).
This ward cares for patients who are one step down from critical care and EPOC who have had surgery for Colorectal, Upper GI, Sarcoma and Urology conditions.
Previous surgical ward experience in an acute secondary NHS care setting is essential for this role, and you must also demonstrate a passion for post-operative care and ERAS recovery.
We are looking for nurses with the skills to thrive within a fast-paced environment and the ability to cope under pressure.
We work closely with our surgical and specialist nursing teams to develop a multi-disciplinary approach which shapes and provides high class surgical care for our patients.
In turn we will offer you opportunities to develop your clinical skills in complex post-operative care.
