Role summary

This role involves providing essential administrative support to Consultant teams within NNUH's Paediatric Services, acting as a key link between patients, families, and healthcare professionals. You will manage complex communications, coordinate appointments and referrals, and ensure smooth patient pathways. The position requires independent work, confidentiality, and the ability to remain calm under pressure, contributing to an efficient and compassionate service. The ideal candidate will be adaptable, dependable, and committed to excellent customer care, embodying the Trust's PRIDE values.

Key responsibilities

  • Deal efficiently and effectively with direct and indirect enquiries from patients, medical and nursing staff, GPs, Social Services and other health professionals, responding to complex enquiries and resolving problems.
  • Accurately transcribe all correspondence by touch typing from audio/digital dictation or shorthand using knowledge of medical terminology, and generate routine and non-routine correspondence independently.
  • Update RTT in accordance with Trust guidelines and ensure accurate patient pathways, investigating and correcting errors as required, and assist with data management utilising PAS and other departmental patient databases.
  • Complete the Tertiary referral proforma/template for internal/external referrals as per Trust policy.
  • Promptly action clinical investigations, results and outcomes, and utilise Trust reports to service and administer waiting lists.
  • Book patients from waiting lists and update associated booking systems in line with departmental requirements and the Trust RTT Policy.

Essential criteria

  • RSA III or equivalent training or experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology/AMSPAR qualification
  • Good general standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Effective role model, demonstrating NNUH's PRIDE values of People focussed, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence
  • Demonstrates understanding and commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Flexible approach to constantly changing work priorities
  • Previous NHS experience, knowledge of the NHS agenda and government targets, implementing and proposing changes to policy within own work area
  • Previous digital/audio typing experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of the need for confidentiality
