Role summary
This role involves undertaking and analysing specialist diagnostic investigations for sleep breathing and non-sleep breathing disorders, including pulse oximetry and blood gas monitoring. The post holder will support multidisciplinary staff with CPAP equipment, instruct junior staff, and contribute to research projects. Key responsibilities include performing complex sleep and lung function tests, reporting findings, and teaching students and the public.
Essential criteria
- Healthcare Science degree Or Degree in a Biological subject and ARTP Part 1 and Part 2 (a pass for the January exams for ARTP Part 2 will be considered) or equivalent qualification.
- Experience as a Band 6 in Sleep and Lung Function Services.
- Continuing Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
- Have RCCP registration.
- Post-graduate courses in sleep such as those provided by the Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology, The British Thoracic Society and The European Respiratory Society
- Work Based Assessor Training
- CH GCP Training
- Have a good knowledge of respiratory physiology and its disorders.
- Have knowledge/experience of sleep physiology and monitoring techniques (oximetry, respiratory studies and CPAP therapy).
- Experience of teaching colleagues and patients in physiological monitoring techniques.
- Have knowledge /experience of advanced sleep physiology and monitoring techniques (Full polysomnography and MSLT).
- Experience of teaching small groups using various presentation media
- Able to work effectively as an individual and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Evidence of implementing innovation or having responsibility for part of service delivery.
- Well-organised and able to prioritize own workload and that of others.
- Have good knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel.
- Demonstrate leadership skills.
- Previous experience of Hospital software.
- Evidence of managing a laboratory.

Job summary
Undertakes, and analyses a range of specialist diagnostic investigations for the assessment of sleep breathing/non-sleep breathing disorders in adults, including pulse oximetry, PAT, capillary and transcutaneous blood gas monitoring. Tests to be undertaken according to current AASM standards or variations within the policies/protocols of the department.
Supports multidisciplinary staff on the use and type of CPAP equipment for acute and elective admissions, and initiating, assessing, and evaluating this therapy as required.
Assess training and instruct junior staff in the techniques used within the department.
To perform studies and measurements and give technical advice and support on research projects carried out within the department or in collaboration with other departments/companies/hospitals.
