Role summary
This Band 7 Paediatric Practice Development Nurse role involves leading and supporting the development of nursing practice across paediatric services. The post holder will design, deliver, and evaluate education and training programmes, and develop clinical competencies and learning resources. They will also promote evidence-based practice, lead quality improvement initiatives, and support staff development through coaching and mentorship. The role requires significant paediatric experience and strong communication skills to influence change and improve patient outcomes.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and support the development of nursing practice across paediatric services.
- Design, deliver and evaluate education and training programmes.
- Develop and maintain clinical competencies and learning resources.
- Support staff development through coaching, teaching and mentorship.
- Promote evidence-based practice and support implementation of clinical guidelines.
- Lead and contribute to quality improvement and practice development initiatives.
Essential criteria
- Registered Children's Nurse with current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
- Degree or evidence of study at degree level
- Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to paediatric practice and clinical education
- Practice Assessor qualification or equivalent in accordance with NMC Standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with children, young people, families and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to present information clearly to a range of audiences.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and healthcare professionals.
- Able to provide constructive feedback, coaching and support to staff.
- Ability to communicate complex information in an accessible and supportive manner.
- Demonstrates effective listening and interpersonal skills.
- In-depth knowledge of current paediatric nursing practice and standards.
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice and quality improvement methodologies.
- Understanding of clinical governance, patient safety and risk management.
- Knowledge of NMC Code and Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment.
- Knowledge of safeguarding children legislation and national guidance.
- Understanding of NHS priorities relating to education, workforce development and quality improvement.
- Significant post-registration experience within acute paediatric services.
- Experience of recent working at Band 6 level or above.
- Experience of developing, delivering and evaluating clinical education programmes.
- Experience of supporting competency-based learning and assessment.
- Experience of leading practice development, service improvement or quality improvement initiatives.
- Experience of implementing evidence-based practice and supporting change in clinical practice.
- Experience of supporting students, newly qualified nurses and registered staff in clinical learning.
- Ability to work flexibly to meet the requirements of the service.
- Ability to plan, organise and prioritise own workload effectively.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines within a busy clinical environment.
- Able to plan and deliver education, training and practice development activities.
- Ability to coordinate projects and monitor progress against agreed objectives.
- Able to anticipate challenges and adjust plans to meet changing service needs.
Desirable criteria
- Master's degree in nursing, Education or related subject, or working towards.
- Quality Improvement or coaching qualification.
- Experience of facilitating teaching sessions, presentations or workshops.
- Experience of communicating and supporting change across clinical teams.
- Awareness of national paediatric quality standards and benchmarking programmes.
- Previous experience in a Practice Development Nurse, Clinical Educator or Professional Development role.
- Experience of coordinating education programmes or workforce development initiatives.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Band 7 Paediatric Practice Development Nurse to join our team. This role is ideal for a children's nurse passionate about education, professional development, quality improvement and delivering safe, evidence-based, family-centred care.
The post holder will provide leadership in practice development, working with clinical teams to identify learning needs, enhance workforce capability and support continuous improvement. Acting as a role model, you will use your clinical expertise to influence practice, facilitate learning and embed evidence-based standards.
You will lead education programmes, clinical competencies and learning resources for nurses, healthcare support workers, students and newly qualified staff. Working with multidisciplinary colleagues, you will promote a positive learning culture and support high-quality, compassionate care.
