Role summary
This is a full-time Band 5 rotational Speech and Language Therapist post within the Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service. The role involves assessing and intervening for adults with acquired neurological communication and swallowing disorders, including a significant proportion of clients for whom English is an Additional Language. The rotation includes placements in Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU), Acute Stroke Unit, and Acute Inpatient and Outpatient Services, offering diverse experience and support for early career therapists. You will develop clinical skills in dysphagia management, complex communication disorders, and multidisciplinary team working.
Key responsibilities
- Provide assessment and intervention for adults with acquired neurological communication and swallowing disorders.
- Work within specialist stroke services, developing skills in dysphagia assessment and management, including cough reflex testing and involvement in FEES/VFSS.
- Manage complex communication disorders and participate in MDT working and goal-setting.
- Work across acute inpatient and outpatient services, managing own caseload with support.
- Collaborate with patients, families, carers, and colleagues across health, social care, and voluntary sector organisations.
- Participate in a structured Preceptorship Programme, clinical supervision, and peer support.
Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
- HCPC registration
- Knowledge of assessment and management of adult acquired communication disorders
- Knowledge of assessment and management of dysphagia in acute settings
- Understanding of current evidence-based practice relevant to adult Speech and Language Therapy
- Understanding of relevant legislation including Mental Capacity Act, consent and safeguarding
- Experience working with adults with communication and/or swallowing disorders
- Experience working within an acute hospital environment/OP setting
- Experience of multidisciplinary team working
- Experience delivering education or training to healthcare professionals, patients or carers
- Experience supporting students, assistants or junior staff
- Experience contributing to service development initiatives
- Excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to assess, diagnose and manage adults with communication and swallowing disorders with support.
- Ability to prioritise and manage a complex caseload within a fast-paced acute environment with support
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to build effective relationships with patients, carers and colleagues
- Competent ICT skills including working with electronic patient records and report writing
- Commitment to developing own learning and professional development and use evidence-based practice
