Role summary
This role is for a non-medical Independent Prescriber (Nurse, AHP, or Pharmacist) to join the Specialist Weight Management Service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The primary purpose is to provide prescribing capacity for patients receiving weight management medication, including GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist therapies. The post holder will work autonomously, conducting consultations, initiating and titrating medication, and providing ongoing review and monitoring in line with national guidance and local pathways. They will be professionally accountable for their prescribing decisions and actions.
Essential criteria
- Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- Non-Medical Independent Prescribing qualification and current prescribing annotation/registration where applicable
- Relevant professional qualification/degree appropriate to professional registration

- Relevant postgraduate education, training or continuing professional development
- Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge and clinical judgement required to prescribe, titrate and monitor GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist therapies safely and effectively
- Ability to review relevant clinical information, including co-morbidities, concurrent medication, contraindications, interactions and clinical risks, to support safe prescribing
- Ability to request or arrange, interpret and act upon appropriate blood tests and investigations relevant to prescribing and monitoring
- Ability to recognise the limits of own competence and seek appropriate clinical or medical advice or escalation
- Ability to recognise clinical deterioration, abnormal findings or situations requiring further assessment, specialist advice or medical input and escalate appropriately
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant clinical governance, medicines management and prescribing standards
- Effective consultation, communication, documentation and patient education skills
- Clinical Experience
- Appropriate post-qualification experience as an Independent Prescriber
- Experience of prescribing and titrating GLP-1 receptor agonist and/or GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist medication
- Experience of medication review and monitoring, including assessment of treatment response, tolerability and adverse effects
- Relevant experience in the management of patients with long-term conditions and/or multimorbidity
- Experience of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Experience within specialist weight management and/or diabetes services

Job summary
We wish to appoint a non-medical Independent Prescriber (Nurse, Allied Health Professional or Pharmacist) to join our Specialist Weight Management Service (SWMS) at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on a fixed-term basis, specifically to support the delivery of the weight management medication pathway.
The primary purpose of the role is to provide additional prescribing capacity for patients receiving weight management medication, including GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist therapies, as part of the Specialist Weight Management Service.
Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will undertake prescribing consultations for patients who have been assessed as suitable for pharmacological treatment, initiate and titrate medication in accordance with relevant NICE guidance, local policies and agreed treatment pathways, and provide ongoing medication review and monitoring.
