Role summary
This role involves providing clinical leadership and management within the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU), acting as a senior clinical practitioner and role model. The post holder will assess, manage, and provide ongoing care for women and birthing people attending the MAU with pregnancy-related concerns. Responsibilities include comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments, responding to clinical changes, and escalating concerns to senior medical staff. The midwife will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, high-quality, evidence-based, and compassionate maternity care.
Essential criteria
- Current registration with NMC
- Relevant degree or equivalent
- Evidence of professional development

- NLS accreditation
- Must be willing to work towards further development
- Significant post-registration experience as a midwife
- Substantial experience in an acute maternity setting
- Experience of assessing and managing women with a range of pregnancy-related presentations
- Experience of managing clinical risk and escalating concerns
- Previous Band 7 or equivalent senior midwifery experience
- Experience within a Maternity Assessment Unit/triage environment
- Skills and Knowledge
- Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making skills
- Ability to recognise and respond appropriately to clinical deterioration
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritise workload and manage competing demands
- Good understanding of clinical governance, risk management and safeguarding

Job summary
The post holder will provide effective clinical leadership and management within the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU), acting as a senior clinical practitioner and role model to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, evidence-based and compassionate maternity care.
The Band 7 Midwife will be responsible for the assessment, management and ongoing care of women and birthing people attending the MAU with a range of pregnancy-related concerns and complications. They will undertake comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments, recognise and respond promptly to changes in clinical condition, initiate appropriate care and ensure timely escalation to senior medical staff and the wider multidisciplinary team when required.
Working collaboratively with midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists and other healthcare professionals, the post holder will promote individualised, woman-centred care and support effective multidisciplinary working. They will ensure care is delivered in accordance with clinical guidelines, safeguarding requirements, infection prevention and control standards, and relevant local and national policies, while maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation.
