Key responsibilities
- Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of high-quality patient care.
- Develop and maintain a broad range of advanced surgical nursing skills.
- Provide day-to-day supervision, support, and guidance to Health Care Support Workers, student nurses, and other junior members of the nursing team.
- Organise and participate in the delivery of high standard, evidence-based nursing care.
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse, with current live NMC registration / Student awaiting pin
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Completion of training for extended roles required by the ward / department. i.e. IV drug administration, Cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, male catheterisation, PCA and Epidural training
- At least 12 months recent experience as a Registered Nurse in either an acute hospital setting, surgical setting, admission/ emergency setting OR a qualifying student who has completed a placement within surgery or an admissions unit
- Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping
- Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and multidisciplinary team
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Basic computer / IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service i.e. IHS, Acis, Email use.
Desirable criteria
- Teaching and assessing qualification or willing to undertake after 2 years post registration (secured a position on this type of course)

Job summary
Ward 26B is an elective surgical ward caring for patients undergoing planned surgical procedures booked through the Trust's waiting list coordinators. The ward admits and cares for patients from a range of surgical specialties.
In addition, during periods of reduced elective activity, the ward supports patient flow by receiving and caring for non-elective surgical patients from Ward 32B.
The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of high-quality patient care for patients admitted directly from theatre recovery (Mediroom) and Intensive Care Units (ICU).
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a broad range of advanced surgical nursing skills, including:
- Stoma care and bowel management
- Complex wound care
- Nasogastric tube insertion and management
- PICC line care and management
- Administration and monitoring of syringe drivers
- Management of Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
- Management of epidural analgesia
