Role summary
This is a part-time Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist position within the mainstream primary schools' team. The role involves working with children aged 5-11, providing specialist assessments and interventions for various communication needs. You will support children, families, and school staff, with dedicated time for clinical work, planning, and NQP competencies. The post is based at Mile End Hospital and involves visiting allocated schools weekly.
Key responsibilities
- Support children and young people with varied speech, language and communication needs.
- Visit allocated mainstream schools weekly.
- Provide specialist assessments and a range of specialist and targeted interventions.
- Offer training, support and advice to school staff and parents.
- Support children with developmental language disorder, autism, speech disorders, complex needs, and other communication difficulties.
Essential criteria
- Recognised qualification in Speech and Language Therapy
- Registered member of HCPC
- Member of RCSLT
- To have undergraduate experience in theories, assessment and therapy techniques / approaches for children with communication disorders
- To have undergraduate experience in implications for delays / disorders within an educational setting
- Experience of working with a range of children's communication disorders in community clinics and educational establishments at an undergraduate level.
- Experience of working with children's communication disorders in an undergraduate level.
- Experience of ensuring health and safety standards are followed
- Experience of working collaboratively with a range of professionals to provide direct and indirect intervention for the client group.
Desirable criteria
- To have undergraduate experience in special educational issues for client groups
- Experience of working with school aged children.
- Some experience of working with bilingual families in deprived socio-economic inner-city areas
- Experience of providing training to education and health staff and parents and carers
- Up-to-date knowledge of research relating to children with speech and language disorders
- Awareness of principles of clinical governance
- Developed negotiating and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of the roles of other professionals working with specialist client group
- Understanding of the roles of other professionals working with specialist client group
- Knowledge of issues around inclusive education and the associated issues for children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs
- Knowledge of the impact of socio-economic factors affecting speech and language therapy provision

This 3-day post will have direct clinical time for 2 to 2 1/2 days and your timetable will also have dedicated planning time and time for NQP competencies.
