Role summary
This role involves acting as an autonomous practitioner, providing specialist nursing care and expertise to Children & Young People (CYP) with epilepsy. The post holder will manage a complex patient caseload, conduct clinical assessments, and develop personalised management plans. They will also lead on epilepsy education, run independent nurse-led clinics, and provide advice and training to families and staff. The aim is to safeguard high standards of care and initiate nurse-led initiatives for home-based care.
Essential criteria
- Registered Children's Nurse
- Specialist Practitioner Degree or Equivalent Paediatric degree
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
Desirable criteria
- V300 Non-medical prescriber
- Experience working as an acute nurse for paediatrics
- Experience of effective multiagency working with an ability to establish and maintain collegiate partnership working
- Experience in education, training and facilitation
- Experience of involvement with local and national Epilepsy nursing group
- Ability to work autonomously, prioritise effectively and implement and adapt to new ways of working.
- Effective communicator to a wide range of professionals and situations
- Wide range of paediatric nursing knowledge
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance: quality, audit and risk management

Job summary
The Paediatric Epilepsy Specialist Nurse will act as an autonomous practitioner with responsibility for providing specialist nursing skills, knowledge and expertise in the care and management of Children & Young People (CYP) with epilepsy. The post holder will act as an advocate for patients at all times whilst safeguarding the delivery of high standards of care, in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code (NMC) and national and local guidance in relation to paediatric epilepsy care. Whilst striving to initiate the development of nurse-led initiatives that enable children to be cared for at home as an alternative to hospital.
They will manage a patient caseload and use advanced clinical judgement and autonomous decision making about specialist care and management of patients to formulate clinical management plans. The specialist practitioner will act as a link between primary and secondary care and will lead supervise, educate, train and develop the workforce within the area of responsibility in relation to paediatric epilepsy nursing. The nurse specialist will be accountable and responsible for the effective use of resources.
