NHS Trusts cannot issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for part-time, bank, locum, zero-hours, job-share or short fixed-term (under 12 months) contracts under current Home Office rules. This applies even when the wider Trust holds a Skilled Worker licence.
Role summary
The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) supports the nursing and clinical team in general practice, delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care. The role involves routine clinical tasks, health checks, and prevention, helping patients understand and manage their health. The HCA works as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Practice Nurses, Advanced Practitioners, and GPs. This role offers opportunities to build clinical skills and develop knowledge in long-term conditions.
Essential criteria
- Good standard of general education (for example GCSEs or equivalent, including English)
- Willingness to complete relevant training for the role
- Basic understanding of: Patient care and wellbeing Confidentiality and data protection Infection prevention and control
Desirable criteria
- Care Certificate (or willingness to complete)
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent)
- Training in phlebotomy, NHS Health Checks, or ECGs
- Awareness of general practice and long-term conditions
- Experience and Clinical Skills
- Experience working with people in a care, health, or support role
- Experience working as part of a team
- Experience providing patient or customer-focused care
- Ability to carry out basic clinical tasks (or willingness to train), including: Blood pressure Height, weight, and BMI Urinalysis
- Ability to communicate clearly
- Maintain accurate records and use basic IT systems
- Experience working in general practice or primary care
- Experience carrying out clinical observations (e.g. blood pressure, BMI)
- Experience supporting health promotion or screening programmes
- Experience in long term condition reviews
- Competent in phlebotomy
- Personal Attributes and Working Approach
- Compassionate and patient-focused
- Friendly and approachable
- Willing to learn and develop
- Maintains professionalism and confidentiality
