Role summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Healthcare Scientist/Practitioner to join the Sleep Service at Trafford General Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The role involves performing, analysing, and reporting on various sleep studies, initiating and following up on CPAP treatments, and teaching/mentoring students and junior staff. The position is part-time (22.5 hours) and requires working across Trafford General Hospital and Withington Community Hospital, including weekend, evening, and night shifts.
Essential criteria
- Relevant Sleep Service Experience
- Demonstrable leadership experience in a clinical/physiological setting
- Competent in setting up, downloading and scoring respiratory sleep studies
- Competent in setting up, monitoring and troubleshooting CPAP procedures
- Experience in teaching Sleep Physiology to University undergraduates and nursing students
Desirable criteria
- Experience in performing, scoring and interpreting full video polysomnography.
- Experience in performing, scoring and interpreting actigraphy.
- Experience of mentoring staff
- Experience of working within the NHS or similar Public Health Services.
- Experience of working night shifts
- Experience managing teams or leading service developments
- BSc Biological or Physiological Sciences or Equivalent
- Registered with RCCP, AHCS or BRPT (or eligible for registration)
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
- Further Sleep Qualifications (RPSGT etc)
- Mentoring/Teaching Qualifucations
- Evidence of participation in Research
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to use own initiative to coordinate, plan and prioritise work
- Ability to keep accurate documentation.
- Leadership and team management skills
- Ability to motivate and influence others
- Skilled in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
- Experience in medical electronic maintenance.
- Good knowledge of clinical information systems.
- A good understanding of sleep physiology and pathology.
- A good understanding of respiratory physiology and pathology.
- A good understanding of non-respiratory sleep disorders.

Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Healthcare Scientist/Practitioner to join the Sleep Service at Trafford General Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will work across Trafford General Hospital and Withington Community Hospital as part of the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). The role is 22.5hrs (Including weekend, evening and night shift rotation to suit needs of the service)
The Sleep Service is a modern, dynamic unit serving a large population across the North West. With a CPAP user base of more than 8,000 patients, the service provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic pathways, including the assessment and management of non-respiratory sleep disorders.
We are also actively involved in education and training, contributing to the teaching of students on the PTP course at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Main duties of the job
The position will involve:
Performing, analysing and reporting on in-patient and outpatient sleep studies (including respiratory polygraphy, full video polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing and actigraphy).
Initiating treatment with CPAP and the follow-up of these patients using agreed protocols in both face-to-face and telephone clinics.
Teaching, training and mentoring of students and junior staff.
