Role summary
This is an excellent opportunity for a highly specialist rotational Occupational Therapist with experience in neurology to join the neuro and trauma team at Royal London Hospital. The role involves advanced assessment, treatment, and clinical management of patients with traumatic musculoskeletal and neurological injuries, including neurotrauma, neurosurgery, neurology, and hyper acute rehabilitation. The post holder will rotate approximately every 18 months and will develop leadership skills through supervision and support of other therapists. The ideal candidate will have a passion for Neuro Occupational Therapy, excellent communication skills, and initiative.
Key responsibilities
- Play a major and specialist role in the advanced assessment, treatment and clinical management of patients with traumatic musculoskeletal and neurological injuries.
- Determine clinical diagnosis, functional deficits, and occupational therapy treatment programs.
- Develop efficient and effective OT working processes to support a multi-professional team approach.
- Work with Clinical Lead Therapists to develop the service in line with changing health and social care agendas.
- Be responsible for a team of staff in their clinical area, potentially across multiple specialities.
- Rotate approximately every 18 months through specialities like Neurotrauma, neurosurgery, neurology, and rapid access to acute rehabilitation (RAAR).
Essential criteria
- oBSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy degree or equivalent
- oState registered (HCPC)
- oFulfills KSF outline for Occupational Therapist (Band 7)
- oRelevant post graduate clinical experience, including experience within Stroke, Major Trauma, Orthopaedics, Neurosciences and Hand Therapy.
- oCRB clearance
- oClinical Educators Qualification
- oClinical experience in the NHS or similar health service across range of acute/rehab settings
- oEvidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at post graduate course/training relevant to neurology specialty
- oSubstantial Clinical experience in Major Trauma and/or Neurosciences and/or Stroke at Band 6
- oKnowledge of a range of clinical conditions, particularly in relation to patients post trauma and neurological conditions, and acute stroke
- oAbility to manage a patient with spasticity
- oAbility to assess, treat and appropriately discharge patients with complex cognitive presentations including PDOC & executive dysfunction
- oAbility to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- oAbility to communicate effectively at all levels across the Department and Directorate
- oEffective presentation skills
- oAbility to demonstrate enthusiasm towards teaching and sharing knowledge
- oUnderstanding of own ability to identify learning needs and interests

- oMember of the British Association of Occupational Therapy
- oSupervision Training
- oLeadership training
- oMember of RCOT SSNP
- oExperience of Splinting
- oExperience of complex seating
- oEvidence of post graduate courses relevant to area e.g Harrison training courses.

This post is part of our Band 7 Neuro rotation comprising of Neurosciences (including neurotrauma, neurosurgery, neurology,), and our hyper acute rehabilitation service known as RAAR (Rapid Access to Acute Rehabilitation).
The ideal candidate will have a passion for Neuro Occupational Therapy, excellent communication skills, plenty of initiative and enthusiasm, and with the ability to work autonomously and as a part of a wider MDT.
