Role summary
This is an opportunity for a Biomedical Scientist to join the Specialist Chemistry Department. The role involves carrying out analysis and technical investigations of clinical samples, interpreting and validating results, and providing departmental information and advice. The successful candidate will also undertake routine maintenance of analytical equipment and maintain laboratory supplies.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out analysis and technical investigations of clinical samples in one of the specialist disciplines of Pathology.
- Undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated analysis of all specimens.
- Interpret and validate analytical results, ensuring accuracy and precision.
- Provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, patients and the public.
- Undertake routine maintenance of highly complex analytical equipment as specified in SOPs.
- Maintain laboratory supplies and adhere to written procedures for stock management.
Essential criteria
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
- GCSE English grade C or equivalent
- GCSE Maths grade C or equivalent
- Laboratory experience
- Experience of working with scientific instruments and analysers, and undertaking complex biomedical analysis using either manual or automated techniques.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Written skill demonstrable by lack of typographical errors, correct use of capitals and punctuation.
Desirable criteria
- IBMS approved BSc in Biomedical Science
- State Registered with Health Care Professions Council
- A level in a Science subject
- Substantial (post HCPC registration) laboratory experience. Preferably a recognised specialist laboratory.
- Experience of producing, contributing or updating SOP's.
- Experience of performing sample preparation that requires repetitive tasks carried out at speed and with accuracy. For example manual extraction.

Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our busy Specialist Chemistry Department at BCPS.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Biomedical Scientist (AfC band 6) with a minimum of 3 years' experience as a HCPC registered BMS and hold the specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent. Suitable candidates would have expertise in a range of analytical skills and troubleshooting experience, for example, HPLC, GCMS, ICP-MS, LCMS/MS and Eliza.
Consideration will be given to candidates suitable for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist position. All potential candidates must have a BSc Biomedical Science degree or equivalent, have a formal letter from the IBMS confirming status of the degree and detailing training requirements together with a minimum of 6 months clinical laboratory experience.
Whilst initially based on either the Sandwell or City Health Campus sites, this role will require working across both sites.
Candidates should ensure they meet the requirements of the person specification and that their application demonstrates how this is achieved. Key skills include good analytical and organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.
