Role summary

This role is for an Occupational Therapist with an interest in Palliative Care to join a 19-bed in-patient unit at North Tyneside General Hospital. The unit provides specialist palliative care, including end-of-life care, with a strong multidisciplinary team ethos. The successful candidate will job share with an existing part-time OT, working 18.75 hours over 3 days. The position requires an enthusiastic individual with excellent communication skills and a passion for patient-centred care.

Key responsibilities

  • To work in collaboration with patients and their families to assess needs, improve quality of life, manage fatigue, and work towards preferred place of care or death.
  • To work in collaboration with nursing, medical staff, and the wider MDT on the unit.
  • To work in collaboration with wider members of the MDT and care agencies/integrated care board.
  • To supervise the technical instructor daily.
  • To effectively communicate with patients and families regarding assessments.
  • To carry out risk assessments as part of patient assessments to reduce risk and enable patients to maintain their quality of life.

Essential criteria

  • Degree in O.T
  • State registered with Health Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Practice placement qualification
  • Documented evidence of continuing professional development
  • Substantial post registration experience with relevant experience in specialist area including individual and group work
  • Experience and working understanding of audit procedures
  • Working knowledge and use of evidence based practice and implementation of current research in a specialist area.
  • Application of Health and Safety and risk management policies
  • It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes, or has a Trust personal lease vehicle which may be used for the role. However, the Trust would consider making reasonable adjustments to the role, if necessary, to enable a disabled person to undertake the role

  • Experience of O.T. practice in varied settings
  • Experience of research procedures
  • Knowledge of or experience in coaching and mentoring practices and tools
  • Knowledge of or experience in Quality improvement tools, techniques and methods
  • Taking a lead role in the implementation of current research in a specialist area, both formally and informally.

Job summary

The Palliative Care Unit at North Tyneside General Hospital is looking for an Occupational Therapist with an interest in Palliative care to join our lovely team.

We are a 19 bed in-patient unit that provides specialist palliative care for those patients. We care for patients with complex palliative care needs and includes end of life care.

We have a strong MDT work ethos, which is proudly embedded into practice.

We have a part time Occupational Therapist, who works on the unit and this role is to job share with them.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic occupational therapist with a passion for palliative care.

We are a lovely team and providing high standards of patient centred care is paramount to us. Given the nature of the role it is essential that the successful candidate possess excellent communication skills.
