Role summary
This is a 12-month fixed-term opportunity within the Pathology Department at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, working as a Research Trials Biomedical Assistant in the Blood Sciences department. The role involves preparing and testing trial samples, collaborating with both the Laboratory team and the Research Development Team. Full training will be provided, and the successful candidate will work under the supervision of a Biomedical Scientist, eventually working independently. The Trust encourages personal and professional development, including Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Key responsibilities
- Perform accurate analysis of samples using automated instrumentation or manual techniques, troubleshooting errors.
- Conduct daily laboratory checks, including equipment, inventory, and temperatures.
- Use calibrated pipettes for sample or reagent preparation.
- Undertake training to use laboratory software for booking test requests, entering results, filing samples, and monitoring outstanding work.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and service users to deal with enquiries and provide results.
Essential criteria
- Good GCSE in Science (Grade C or above)
- Previous work experience in Blood Sciences
- Numerate with good IT skills
Desirable criteria
- Previous NHS laboratory experience
- Experience using a Laboratory Information Management System

Job summary
An opportunity has arisen within the Pathology Department at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital to work as a Research Trials Biomedical Assistant, based in the Blood Sciences department. The role is a 12-month fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will work with both the Laboratory team and the Research Development Team in the preparation and testing of Trial samples.
Previous laboratory experience would be an advantage, but not essential, as full training will be given.
You will be required to have good communication and keyboard skills, along with the ability to work under pressure. Although supervised by Biomedical Scientists, once fully trained, you should be capable of working independently.
