Role summary
This role is for an enthusiastic therapist to join the Wheelchair Service team, primarily managing a caseload of children, with some adult cases. The specialist will assess, prescribe, and review manual and powered wheelchairs for long-term use, working closely with patients, families, and other professionals. Duties also include triaging referrals, managing caseloads, planning clinic rotas, and delivering training.
Key responsibilities
- Provide a comprehensive service in the specialised area of wheelchair services.
- Provide clinical expertise at an advanced level in the assessment, diagnosis and management of highly complex clients.
- Manage a caseload of clients (often varied and with highly complex needs), using evidence based clinical reasoning to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
- Provide leadership and clinical education for senior, junior and support staff, through supervision and day-to-day support.
- Regularly supervise undergraduate students on practice placement and participate in placement experience of other professionals.
- Oversee personal wheelchair budgets providing guidance and advice to staff and patients.
Essential criteria
- Diploma/Degree with Honors of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) or Diploma of the College of Occupational Therapist (with Honours) or degree in Occupational Therapy.
- Health & Care Professionals Council registered
- Post Graduate training relevant to specialist area.

Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic therapist to join our forward-thinking, progressive Wheelchair Service team. At Northumbria Wheelchair Services we are committed to innovation, continuous improvement, and developing the skills and expertise of our workforce to deliver the highest quality care.
The role will primarily involve managing a caseload of children, with occasional adult caseloads. You will work closely with patients, families, carers, healthcare professionals, Rehabilitation Engineers and product specialists to assess, prescribe and review manual and powered wheelchairs for long-term use. Paediatric experience is essential.
As an autonomous practitioner, you will manage a varied caseload, including complex cases, ensuring equipment meets clinical, mobility, postural and pressure care needs.
In addition to clinical duties, you will contribute to triaging referrals, managing caseloads, planning clinic rotas, delivering training, supporting student placements and maintaining accurate clinical records.
