Role summary
This role involves joining the portering team at the Becton Centre, assisting with moving equipment, documentation, and waste disposal. You will also help maintain building safety and security, respond to emergencies, and ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The position requires an enthusiastic, reliable individual who enjoys teamwork.
Key responsibilities
- Collect, dispose of, and deliver waste, food, linen, and supplies, and assist with patient transfers and furniture moves.
- Monitor CCTV, respond to security issues, manage door access, and assist with emergency calls to ensure building safety.
- Report maintenance needs, perform minor repairs (e.g., lamp changing, tap testing), and assist with inspections and fire safety checks.
- Help with cleaning and sports hall maintenance.
- Deputise for the Hotel Services Supervisor, overseeing staff, supplies, and vending machine management.
Essential criteria
- GCSE's or equivalent including English and Maths (minimum A-D or equivalent to level 1)
- Experience of working within a customer service environment
- Experience in cleaning, caretaking, or maintenance work
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with others (both verbally and written)
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to follow instruction and direction
- Basic DIY type maintenance knowledge and a basic mechanical aptitude
- To have a flexible approach to work
- The ability to work on own initiative

Desirable criteria
- To have current driving license
- To have City/Guilds 2377 in PAT Testing and City/Guilds Accredited Basic Electrical Course or equivalent or be willing to attain within first year of employment
- First Aid at Work Level 2
- Previous hospital portering/domestic experience
- Previous Hospital caretaking / maintenance experience
- To have a knowledge and understanding of Waste Management Health & Safety general awareness
