Role summary

This role involves coordinating and running cadaveric workshops in the Bioskills Laboratory, encompassing both technical and clerical duties. The post holder will provide support to consultants and industry partners, ensuring compliance with Human Tissue Authority regulations. It requires working in an emotionally challenging environment, handling prosected human cadaveric specimens, and maintaining accurate records.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver a quality service to users of the Bioskills laboratory in a professional manner.
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation to support compliance with HTA governance and local standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare the bioskills laboratory for cadaveric workshops and ensure equipment is fit for purpose.
  • Manage stock levels of consumables, order supplies, and coordinate receipt and storage of deliveries.
  • Assist surgeons with pre-dissection of cadaveric tissue and maintain cleanliness and hygiene within the laboratory.
  • Ensure legal disposal of spent specimens and cross-reference paperwork relating to cadaveric tissue.

Essential criteria

  • GCSE Maths, English
  • A-Level / NVQ / Level 3 qualification in science related subject ie; Biology, as good understanding of human anatomy is required.
  • Ability to follow established local and trust Standard Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments and Protocols.
  • Experience in reviewing and updating local SOP's.
  • Demonstrable competency in maintaining confidentiality, data protection, GDPR
  • Good working knowledge of Health and Safety.
  • I.T- working knowledge of MS office eg: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Ability to fulfil physical aspects of the role, including frequent lifting and handling of instruments and materials. Moving, walking reaching using steps, pushing trolleys and distributing boxes.
  • Manual dexterity: ability to safely and carefully handle micro-instruments, assist consultants with pre-dissection, holding nerves/ tendons/ vessels.
  • Attention to detail i.e. when cleaning instruments all tissue is removed.
  • Ability to interpret and accurately process data and information as required.
  • Working knowledge of the Human Tissue Authority standards and guidelines.
  • Ability to remain composed in challenging situations, ie exposure to offensive smells, presence of bodily fluids, prosected cut-off points and exposed anatomical structures.
  • Lone working - ability to organise and prioritise own workload, working with direction and supervision from the upper limb education manager. Able to work with frequent interruptions and in a busy environment.
  • Able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service. Early starts, late finishes and some weekend work required.
  • Ability to integrate well with people from all disciplines including consultants, surgeons, industry reps and domestic assistants
  • Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation

Desirable criteria

  • IT related qualifications
  • Previous laboratory or mortuary experience, under HTA licence.
  • Worked in a hospital theatre setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good lab practice/theatre practise.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy

Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Bio-Skills Laboratory Co-Ordinator to work 30 hours per week. The role is primarily Monday - Friday but does involve weekend working.

This role covers a wide range of duties relating to the co-ordination and running of cadaveric workshops within the Bioskills Laboratory. It includes both technical and clerical duties. Providing efficient and accurate support to Wrightington Consultants, other Trust colleagues and Industry Partners.

A key aspect of this role is the ability to work in an emotionally challenging environment with the ability to handle prosected human cadaveric specimens. With a responsibility to uphold the legal regulations as set out by the Human Tissue Authority

Main duties of the job

This role covers a wide range of duties associated with the supervision of the Bioskills Lab. There are aspects of this role that will involve the management and physical handling of prosected human cadaveric tissue which some may find emotionally challenging, this includes the removal and cleaning of bodily fluids and tissue. Exposure to unpleasant odours and visually upsetting scenes.

Recording of information is a key part of this role. Maintaining accurate records and some data entry
