Role summary

This Senior Pharmacy Technician role involves supporting medicines management on wards and providing leadership in the dispensary at Whipps Cross University Hospital. You will contribute to dispensary operations, build relationships with hospital teams, and participate in project work to enhance patient care. Key responsibilities

  • Provide ward-based medicines management support.
  • Contribute to dispensary operations, including management support.
  • Build effective working relationships with wider hospital teams.
  • Take part in project work to improve patient care and service efficiency.
  • Act as a mentor to Trainee Pharmacy Assistants, Rotational Foundation Pharmacy Technicians, and Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Support the effective management of the team, by monitoring and reporting Key Performances Indicators (KPI's), training and developing staff, maintaining and auditing controlled drugs, FP10 and stock control, co-coordinating pharmacy specific audits, implementing and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and supporting ward based dispensing programs.

Essential criteria

  • BTEC Pharmaceutical Sciences / NVQ 3 or equivalent
  • Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification HEE LaSE Medicines Optimisation qualification or equivalent
  • Experience of working in a hospital or community pharmacy setting
  • Significant experience as a pharmacy technician
  • Experience of supervising others and providing feedback for development
  • Experience of pharmacy labelling and stock control systems
  • Patient counselling
  • Experience or organising a service on a day-to-day basis
  • Experience of holding regular team meetings
  • Experience of giving feedback
  • Experience of hospital stock distribution and top-up services
  • Medicines management experience in a ward based setting, e.g. medication history taking, POD assessment etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
  • IT literate and able to use Microsoft office.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Interpret and dispense prescriptions accurately
  • Organisation and prioritisation of workload
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to motivate self and others
  • Time management skills
  • Methodical attention to detail
  • Good numerical skills. Able to perform pharmaceutical calculations
  • Understanding of GPhC revalidation requirements
  • Knowledge of medicines management systems at ward level
  • Up to date knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmacy practice, e.g. controlled drugs
  • Health and Safety at Work Understanding of stock control systems
  • Knowledge of drugs, side effects and where to find further information
  • Knowledge of Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines requirements
  • Understanding of the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of patient safety initiatives
